Conservationists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/org\/science\/article\/pii\/S1314283625001204#:~:text=Introduction,forestry.gov.cn).\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:theorize;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">theorize<\/a> that there are fewer than 1,000 white-eared night herons left, according to ScienceDirect, and BirdLife International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdlife.org\/news\/2024\/01\/11\/saving-east-asias-last-dalmatian-pelicans\/#:~:text=Dalmatian%20pelicans%20are%20the%20largest,coastal%20areas%20of%20eastern%20China.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:reports;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reports<\/a> that there are fewer than 150 Dalmatian pelicans left.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Though the sighting is cheering, the Chinese merganser is considered endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is on the <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/resources\/conservation-tool\/iucn-red-list-threatened-species\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Red List;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Red List<\/a>, which compiles the touchstone data on species&#8217; endangerment statuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">BirdLife&#8217;s DataZone <a href=\"https:\/\/datazone.birdlife.org\/species\/factsheet\/scaly-sided-merganser-mergus-squamatus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:says;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">says<\/a> a major reason for the Chinese mergansers&#8217; shrinking numbers is that &#8220;riverine forests throughout breeding habitat are still threatened by the construction of hydroelectric dams, dredging, and other human-induced disturbances, despite the strengthening of laws to prevent large-scale deforestation in Russia, China, and DPR Korea.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/datazone.birdlife.org\/species\/factsheet\/scaly-sided-merganser-mergus-squamatus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u00a0;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are real benefits to saving endangered species that go beyond offering birdwatchers a sight to see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/story\/why-save-species#:~:text=None%20of%20these%20creatures%20exists,composition%20of%20the%20wildlife%20community.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:explains;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">explains<\/a> that people thrive when species survive \u2014 they offer medicinal properties and protect agriculture and biodiversity, and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When species such as the vaquita porpoise flourish, fishing is more sustainable.
