Tommy Paul<\/a> and Ethan Quinn<\/a> put the United States in the driving seat on the opening day of its tie against Hungary in the first round of the 2026 Davis Cup Qualifiers.<\/p>\n Paul set the tone in the opening rubber with a composed 7-6(3), 6-3 victory over Zsombor Piros<\/a>, before Quinn moved the former champion 2-0 ahead with a dramatic 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(11) victory against Fabian Marozsan<\/a> in Hungary. Quinn saved four match points in a tense deciding-set tie-break, leaving the United States needing just one more victory on Sunday to clinch the tie.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, Jurij Rodionov<\/a> delivered for Austria in its tie against Japan on Saturday. The World No. 170 earned a 5-7, 6-1, 6-0 victory against Yoshihito Nishioka<\/a> to earn his country a dramatic 3-2 victory.<\/p>\n With the tie level at 1-1 after Friday\u2019s Day 1 action, Yosuke Watanuki<\/a> and Takeru Yuzuki<\/a> put Japan ahead with a 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 6-4 victory against Alexander Erler<\/a> and Lucas Miedler<\/a> in Tokyo.<\/p>\n However, Lukas Neumayer<\/a> levelled with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Shintaro Mochizuki<\/a> before Rodionov ensured Austria would advance to the second round of qualifiers, to be held in September. The Final 8 will then take place in Bologna in November, with eight nations competing to lift the trophy in a six-day event. Italy is the three-time defending champion.<\/p>\n Dino Prizmic<\/a> secured a 3-1 victory for Croatia with a 7-6(5), 7-6(2) win against Denmark’s Elmer Moeller<\/a>. Earlier, Nikola Mektic<\/a> and Mate Pavic<\/a> beat Johannes Ingildsen<\/a> and Carl Emil Overbeck<\/a> 6-2, 7-5.<\/p>\n Germany also sealed a win on Saturday against Peru. Leading 2-0 from Friday, Kevin Krawietz<\/a> and Tim Puetz<\/a> beat Ignacio Buse<\/a> and Arklon Huertas Del Pino Cordova<\/a> 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 to give their country an unassailable 3-0 lead. Germany is a three-time Davis Cup champion, last triumphing in 1993.<\/p>\n Czechia will take a 2-0 lead against Sweden into Sunday\u2019s play. Jiri Lehecka<\/a> beat Dragos Nicolae Madaras<\/a> 6-3, 6-4 and Dalibor Svrcina<\/a> downed Olle Wallin<\/a> 6-1, 6-3. India and the Netherlands are level at 1-1. Guy Den Ouden<\/a> beat Sumit Nagal<\/a> 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, before Dhakshineswar Suresh<\/a> overcame Jesper de Jong<\/a> 6-4, 7-5.
