SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. \u2014 The Villanova University women’s tennis team earned a hard-fought 4\u20133 BIG EAST victory over Seton Hall on Saturday, February 7.<\/p>\n

Seton Hall claimed the doubles point to open the match, winning two of the three courts. Villanova secured a victory at No. 1 doubles, where the duo of Callahan and Gehrig cruised to a 6\u20132 win, but the Pirates captured the remaining two matches as the teams of Cocoran\/Stevens and Gondorova\/Monti were defeated.<\/p>\n

The Wildcats responded strongly in singles play, winning four matches to secure the team victory. Senior Maggie Gehrig<\/a> picked up a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, 6\u20131, 6\u20134, while junior Jenna Stevens<\/a> followed with a 6\u20134, 6\u20132 triumph on court No. 4. Junior Lauren Monti<\/a> kept the momentum going with a 6\u20132, 6\u20132 victory, and sophomore Alina Kornyeva<\/a>\u00a0delivered a dominant performance at No. 6 singles, dropping just one game in a 6\u20131, 6\u20130 win.<\/p>\n

Villanova’s lone singles loss came on court No. 3, where Miriam Gondorova<\/a> retired after taking the opening set.<\/p>\n

With the win, Villanova improves to 2\u20134 overall and 1\u20130 in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats continue their road trip on Sunday, February 8, when they face Lehigh at 11:00 a.m.<\/p>\n
