Bruno Fernandes has contributed a staggering sum in tax over the past year amid uncertainty over his Manchester United<\/a> future. The club skipper, who pockets around \u00a3300,000 weekly, ranks among Britain’s highest taxpayers.<\/p>\n

In the last 12 months alone, he’s handed over approximately \u00a39million to the Treasury,<\/a> according to the recently published Sunday Times Tax List.<\/a> His substantial earnings reflect his status as arguably United’s most dependable performer throughout a turbulent period for the club, which has seen a succession of managers come and go.<\/p>\n

Reports suggest Fernandes<\/a> has become weary of the constant turmoil, with fellow Portuguese Ruben Amorim becoming the latest manager to be axed.<\/a> The midfielder has previously considered a switch to the Saudi Pro League, but rejected a move to the Gulf state last summer.<\/a><\/p>\n

Fresh offers are almost certain to arrive this summer,<\/a> though supporters will be hoping the resurgence under Michael Carrick<\/a> can persuade the 31-year-old to remain at Old Trafford. His contract runs until summer 2027, with a 12-month extension option. Yet the financial attractions of relocating to Saudi Arabia are clear.<\/p>\n

Beyond the enormous wages on offer, footballers pay no tax on their income in the kingdom. This contrasts sharply with the 45 per cent levy on earnings above \u00a3125,000 in Britain.<\/p>\n

While he perhaps couldn’t dream of matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s<\/a> eye-watering \u00a33.74m weekly earnings, a pay packet hovering around the \u00a31m mark wouldn’t be unrealistic. Take Karim Benzema and Riyad Mahrez<\/a>, for example, who both pocket more than \u00a3800,000 a week.<\/p>\n

Fernandes isn’t even the biggest tax contributor at United. That is Casemiro, a player who’s certain to depart the club come summer.<\/p>\n

The Brazilian midfielder commands a staggering \u00a3375,000 per week according to the Sunday Times list, which means he’s forked out nearly \u00a311m in tax over the past year.<\/p>\n

That places him as the third-highest taxpayer in British football, trailing only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland<\/a> (\u00a317m) and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah<\/a> (\u00a314.5m).<\/p>\n

Raheem Sterling<\/a>, who recently parted ways with Chelsea<\/a> by mutual agreement, contributed \u00a39.8m in tax – \u00a3100,000 more than Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.<\/p>\n

Fernandes matches City’s Bernardo Silva on \u00a39m. Topping the overall tax list was bookmaker Betfred, which handed over \u00a3400m to the Treasury. Music stars Harry Styles<\/a> and Ed Sheeran<\/a>, along with boxer Anthony Joshua<\/a>, also feature in the top 100.<\/p>\n
