Japan\u2019s conservative prime minister Sanae Takaichi has won a landslide victory after she gambled on a high-stakes snap election.<\/a><\/p>\n

Takaichi, who took office in October<\/a> after being elected leader of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), surpassed the 310 seats needed for a supermajority in the 465-seat lower house, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported from the official election count on Sunday evening. The supermajority allows her ruling coalition to override the upper house, where it lacks a majority. <\/p>\n

An NHK exit poll as voting ended earlier on Sunday projected the LDP would win between 274 and 326 seats. The party and its coalition partner Ishin were projected to win a combined 302-366 seats, as voters turned out amid freezing temperatures in a rare winter election.<\/p>\n

The far-right Sanseito party, which promises to put \u201cJapanese first,\u201d was projected to take up to 14 seats, according to the exit poll, which would quadruple its numbers but fall short of the 30 seats it had targeted.<\/p>\n

Speaking from LDP headquarters as the results came in, Takaichi said her party\u2019s coalition with Ishin would continue, adding that she would place importance on fiscal sustainability and had no plans for a major cabinet reshuffle.<\/p>\n

In Japanese tradition, a candidate\u2019s victory is marked with a paper flower. The scale of the win was visible on a board behind Takaichi filled with red paper roses for LDP candidates.<\/p>\n

Taiwan\u2019s President Lai Ching-te was among the first foreign leaders to congratulate Takaichi, saying he looked forward to promoting peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n

\u201cMay your victory bring a more prosperous and secure future for Japan and its partners in the region,\u201d Lai posted on X. Takaichi has been bullish on Taiwan, triggering a major row with China<\/a> in November when she told lawmakers that a potential Chinese attack on the Beijing-claimed island could prompt a Japanese military response.<\/p>\n

Takaichi\u2019s snap election caught her party, the opposition, and much of the electorate off guard, but her gamble, fueled by the power of her personality and some unlikely help from young voters consumed by \u201cSanamania,\u201d appears to have paid off.<\/p>\n

The nation\u2019s first female prime minister had sought direct public backing in her bid to increase Japan\u2019s defense capabilities and boost its influence on the world stage.<\/p>\n

Her ambitious agenda reflects a growing sense of urgency in Japan, which faces security threats from China and North Korea even as the U.S., its most important ally, shifts attention to the Western Hemisphere and avoids antagonizing China ahead of reciprocal visits by U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n

Among world leaders, Takaichi appears to have one of the most positive relationships with Trump, hitting it off with the U.S. president when he visited Japan<\/a> days after she took office in October.<\/p>\n

Trump endorsed Takaichi in a Truth Social post on Thursday, calling her \u201ca strong, powerful, and wise\u201d leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my visit to Japan I, and all of my Representatives, were extremely impressed with her,\u201d Trump said, adding that he and Takaichi would meet at the White House on March 19.<\/p>\n

U.S. presidents do not typically endorse candidates in other countries\u2019 elections, but Trump has done so on multiple occasions.<\/p>\n

George Edward Glass, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, congratulated Takaichi on what he called an \u201cimpressive win\u201d and said he looked forward to deepening ties with her government.<\/p>\n

Relations with China have been less positive over her remarks on Taiwan. Nationalists cheered Takaichi for her intervention on the issue, which went much further than sitting Japanese leaders have gone previously, while others criticized it as reckless.<\/p>\n

China, one of Japan\u2019s biggest trading partners, responded by reimposing a ban on Japanese seafood imports, implementing restrictions on rare earth mineral exports and warning Chinese nationals against traveling to Japan.<\/p>\n

Takaichi had said she would step down if her ruling coalition lost its majority, but instead looks set to secure a large majority for her LDP party, which has led Japanese governments for much of the country\u2019s postwar history.<\/p>\n

Her popularity comes even as much of the public remains skeptical of her party, which has been dogged by scandals and suffered two embarrassing parliamentary election losses in the last two years.<\/p>\n

For many voters, Takaichi \u2014 a motorbike enthusiast and heavy metal drummer \u2014 is a refreshing change of pace in Japan\u2019s male-dominated politics, despite having traditionalist views that are not always seen as advancing women, and the appointment of just two women in her cabinet.<\/p>\n

Much of the craze for Takaichi has been based less on her policies than on her style, with her pledge to \u201cwork, work, work, work and work\u201d being named the catchphrase of the year. Items associated with her have gone viral, from the pink ballpoint pen she uses to take notes in parliament to her $900 black leather handbag, now sold out months in advance.<\/p>\n

Her social media savvy has also gained her more than 2.6 million followers on X, almost five times the following of her predecessor, Shigeru Ishiba.
