{"id":462408,"date":"2026-02-08T20:42:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-08T20:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/462408\/"},"modified":"2026-02-08T20:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-08T20:42:09","slug":"volta-a-la-comunitat-valenciana-remco-evenepoel-navigates-chaotic-final-to-secure-overall-victory-as-raul-garcia-pierna-wins-stage-5-from-breakaway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/462408\/","title":{"rendered":"Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana: Remco Evenepoel navigates chaotic final to secure overall victory as Ra\u00fal Garc\u00eda Pierna wins stage 5 from breakaway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"7cf0fb9b-ffa4-4875-8520-ebfca47e0f9e\"><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/remco-evenepoel\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/remco-evenepoel\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/remco-evenepoel\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Remco Evenepoel<\/a> sealed his sixth victory in just eight days of racing for his new Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team, easing through the short fifth stage of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-a-la-comunitat-valenciana\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-a-la-comunitat-valenciana\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/volta-a-la-comunitat-valenciana\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana<\/a> to seal the overall win.<\/p>\n<p>Evenepoel never came under threat on the two major climbs in the first half of the the 94.7-kilometre stage from B\u00e9tera to Valencia but when UAE Team Emirates XRG tried to split the peloton in the final 10 kilometres, the Belgian was attentive to the danger.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"7cf0fb9b-ffa4-4875-8520-ebfca47e0f9e-2\">The surge in pace almost nullified the advantage of the day&#8217;s breakaway remnants, but <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/raul-garcia-pierna\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/raul-garcia-pierna\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/raul-garcia-pierna\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raul Garc\u00eda Pierna<\/a> (Movistar) sprinted to the stage win ahead of escape companions Emil Herzog (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Jasper Schoofs (Soudal-QuickStep).<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>Evenepoel, in the group just four seconds behind, celebrated his first stage race win for his new team ahead of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/joao-almeida\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/joao-almeida\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/riders\/joao-almeida\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jo\u00e3o Almeida<\/a> (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;Super good week,&#8221; was Evenepoel&#8217;s assessment of his milestone win for Red Bull taking two stage wins on the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#8220;The first day Arne [Marit] was second, then day by day we started to win a bit more, we started to really ride as a team all day, and today we end with the final jersey, first and third in GC and a lot of stages also in the front, so I think it&#8217;s very good. (Photo by Szymon Gruchalski\/Getty Images)\"   loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tkgzEUKNuh6GhJFup8zQSL.jpg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/tkgzEUKNuh6GhJFup8zQSL.jpg\" class=\"inline\"\/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The day&#8217;s large breakaway (Image credit: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p id=\"7588aef1-6604-4ca7-a833-b520e0dcda14\">Van der Tuuk, the leader of the mountains classification, made the move to defend the jersey and sealed the victory on the first climb, the Oronet and then was free to ease up on the much harder climb at Garb\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>The steep pitches of that second ascent \u2013 a maximum of 16.4% \u2013 shattered the breakaway, and after the summit it was Herzog leading Pericas, Bernard, August, Schoofs, Movistar&#8217;s Garc\u00eda Pierna and Uriarte with Govekar, Heiduk, Bystr\u00f8m, Bais, Maestri and Caicedo in the first chase group.<\/p>\n<p>On the descent, Heiduk and Bystr\u00f8m made it across to the leaders as Herzog tried to go clear but was reeled in to make nine riders in the lead with 30km to go and 1:30 on the peloton. With Garc\u00eda Pierna, three minutes down on Evenepoel, in the move, Herzog started sitting on.<\/p>\n<p>With 9km to go, August crashed out of the lead group in a turn as the breakaway&#8217;s lead was down to 45 seconds, but <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/uae-team-emirates-xrg\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/uae-team-emirates-xrg\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/uae-team-emirates-xrg\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UAE Team Emirates-XRG<\/a> was about to zero out the clock with 3km to go when another crash \u2013 this time from Bernard and Heiduk \u2013 held up the breakaway briefly.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining six forged on ahead, benefitting from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/red-bull-bora-hansgrohe\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/red-bull-bora-hansgrohe\/\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingnews.com\/road\/teams\/uci-worldtour\/2026\/red-bull-bora-hansgrohe\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe<\/a> moving to the front of the breakaway.
