Memphis, Tenn. \u2013 The University of Memphis men’s tennis team suffered a narrow 2-4 defeat to Northwestern at Leftwich Tennis Center on Sunday.

\nTiger duo Obrad Markovski<\/a>\/Marko Milosavljevic<\/a> picked up a win to start the day at line three, 6-4, while improving their record as a duo to 5-0 on the season. Courts one and two were extremely close matches, both going to tiebreakers. No. 87 Sam Reeve<\/a>\/Marcos Castro Fabra<\/a> fell 4-7 in their tiebreaker, while No. 83 Moritz Kudernatsch<\/a>\/Maxime Dubouch<\/a> suffered a 5-7 defeat in their tiebreaker to clinch the doubles point for Northwestern.

\nSingles told a similar story, with three total tiebreakers and two matches going to a third set. Court four finished first as Leandro Zgraggen<\/a> would fall 4-6, 2-6 to put the Wildcats up 2-0. The Tigers mounted a comeback soon after when Spaniard Marcos Castro Fabra<\/a> claimed victory on court three, 6-2, 7-5, and Frenchman Maxime Dubouch<\/a> followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court two to even the score at 2-2. Marko Milosavljevic<\/a> fell after dropping a close second-set tiebreaker, 8-10, for a final score of 4-6, 6-7 (8).

\nNorthwestern needed one more point to clinch the match and had already won first sets on both remaining courts. However, both Moritz Kudernatsch<\/a> and Luis Carvalho<\/a> won their second sets to push their matches to decisive third sets. Kudernatsch lost his first set in a tiebreaker, 9-11, but came right back with a 6-3 second-set win. Kudernatsch had match points at 5-4 but ended up falling 5-7 in the third set as Northwestern clinched the match 4-2. Carvalho’s match was left unfinished while he was down 3-5 in the third set.

\nMemphis falls to 5-2 and will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Ole Miss. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Oxford, Mississippi.
