U.S. equity futures were rose slightly on Sunday as investors awaited critical economic data and another batch of earnings reports following a volatile week that ended with the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a> reaching a key milestone<\/a>.<\/p>\n S&P 500 futures<\/a> traded up 0.2%, while Nasdaq 100 futures<\/a> gained 0.3%. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a> added 87 points, or 0.2%.<\/p>\n The moves come after the major averages bounced back<\/a> Friday following sizable losses suffered earlier in the week. The rout was sparked by a sell-off in the tech sector, led by software<\/a> stocks. Bitcoin<\/a> also plunged before recovering some as investors took a risk-off posture.<\/p>\n In the prior session, the 30-stock Dow industrials surged 1,200 points, or about 2.5%, to score its first close above 50,000 after hitting that level for the first time earlier in intraday trading. The S&P 500<\/a> rose about 2% and the Nasdaq Composite<\/a> finished more than 2% higher.<\/p>\n Bitcoin broke back above $70,000<\/a> on Friday after sinking below $61,000 Thursday night, while software stocks such as Salesforce<\/a> finished higher. Overall, the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV)<\/a> jumped 3.5%, marking the fund’s first day of gains since the end of last month, when it entered bear market territory<\/a>.<\/p>\n “After an eight-day losing streak, buyers finally stepped back into the software space on Friday, underpinning a much-needed relief rally as the tech sector approached key support near the November lows,” said Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist at LPL Financial. “While this marked a step in the right direction, the broader tech complex remains rangebound until it can decisively break above the December highs.”<\/p>\n “For the broader market to make sustainable progress, renewed tech participation will likely be essential,” he also said, adding that he anticipates the S&P 500 will have some trouble reaching 7,000 without more participation from tech, especially software.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, investors will be watching for the delayed January jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The release was initially scheduled for last Friday but was postponed<\/a> due to the partial government shutdown<\/a>. It also comes after ADP reported last week<\/a> that private payrolls increased by a mere 22,000 in January, well below expectations. Economists polled by Dow Jones anticipate the closely watched jobs report will show a gain of 55,000 in January.<\/p>\n The January consumer price index reading \u2014 which was also delayed by the shutdown \u2014 is due out Friday.<\/p>\n The market’s recent rotation<\/a> out of tech could play out again this week, if the week’s earnings releases are favorable.
