Former Vineland High School (VHS) football star Tyreem Powell recently signed a contract to play for the Calgary Stampeders, a professional football team based in Calgary, Alberta, which competes in the Canadian Football League. The Stampeders, founded in 1945, are an icon of Canadian football; they won eight Grey Cup league championships and dozens of division ones.<\/p>\n
Powel, 24, attended training camp with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL in 2025, but was waived before the start of the regular-season. The six-foot-four, 249-pound athlete, played collegiately as a linebacker at Rutgers University, where he made 201 total tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 10 pass knockdowns, five sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception over 43 games.<\/p>\n
At Vineland High, he was a multi-position player. As quarterback, he passed for 868 yards and eight touchdowns while rushing for 454 yards and five touchdowns. Powell contributed 60 tackles and two interceptions as a linebacker on defense. He earned All-South Jersey honors from the Philadelphia Inquirer twice and was selected to the 2019 Jersey Sports Zone All-Zone Team as a linebacker.
