In a sport still adjusting to major structural changes, Dale Earnhardt Jr says one talking point will shape the narrative throughout the 2026 NASCAR season: the revamped championship points format.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As teams prepare for the Daytona 500 and the long grind that follows, Earnhardt Jr.<\/a> believes the way NASCAR<\/a> determines its champion will spark conversation.<\/p>\n

Earnhardt Jr., who also laid out three changes he wants NASCAR to implement<\/a>, told Hard Rock Bet<\/a> that the focus on how points are awarded and accumulated will be a defining theme this year. \u201cI think the points format and what we discussed earlier about how that\u2019s changed is really going to dominate the conversation all year long,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHow you go about winning a championship has changed, and so the mentality, the approach, the preparation, the mindset for all the drivers will need some tweaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

NASCAR will return to a familiar format for championship determination, dubbed \u201cThe Chase,\u201d which reintroduces a points-based run through the final 10 races of the season rather than the single-race championship finale that had drawn criticism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Under the reshaped system, drivers accumulate points over a defined postseason stretch without rounds of eliminations, and a standardized points grid based on regular-season standings determines who has the edge entering that stretch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earnhardt Jr. said the implications of this shift are significant. \u201cWho can figure that out? Who can adapt to that the quickest? Who can take advantage of that the quickest?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

He drew parallels to earlier eras he competed in, where similar formats demanded early-season stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember racing under a very similar format, and you walked into the season with a lot of anxiety,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you didn\u2019t come into the season and have consistent finishes, if you stumbled, if you had mistakes, if you crashed out, you immediately put yourself at a deficit to the rest of the guys who\u2019ve had great starts, and that is very, very hard to overcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the new design, every race matters, Earnhardt Jr. explained, noting that drivers must treat each event like a critical opportunity to improve their standings.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will be more inclined to be plugged into every race, knowing what\u2019s at stake, what\u2019s at risk,\u201d he said. Gone, for now, are the days that winning a single marquee event guarantees entry into championship contention. Instead, a driver\u2019s fullest body of work across the season is front and center.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earnhardt Jr. said this will require a cultural shift for competitors. \u201cYou\u2019re going to have to have great finishes.
