Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> said he \u201cexplained\u201d to U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> that while Canada paid for the\u00a0Gordie Howe International Bridge<\/a>\u00a0that Trump is threatening to bar from opening<\/a>, its ownership is shared and construction involved U.S. steel and workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe discussed the bridge. I explained that Canada paid for the construction of the bridge \u2014 $6.4 billion \u2014 that the ownership is shared between the state of Michigan and the Government of Canada,\u201d Carney told reporters ahead of a cabinet meeting Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Carney said he had a \u201cpositive conversation\u201d with Trump.<\/p>\n

Carney\u2019s comments came after Trump said Monday he will block the opening of the new bridge<\/a> and trade route connecting Ontario and Michigan until the United States is \u201ccompensated for everything we have given\u201d Canada.<\/p>\n

A White House official said on background that it was \u201cunacceptable\u201d for Trump that Canada owns the bridge \u201cfully,\u201d even though Carney has clarified that Michigan will have shared ownership of the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President believes that the United States should own at least half of the bridge, have shared authority over what passes across it, and participates in the economic benefits generated by its use,\u201d the White House official said.<\/p>\n

The official said the Ambassador Bridge \u201calready connects the U.S. and Canada just miles away from the Gordie Howe Bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a lengthy post on his Truth Social website, Trump called for immediate negotiations over the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ont., and Detroit, Mich., saying he would seek U.S. ownership of \u201cat least one half of this asset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carney said U.S. content and workers were used in the making of the bridge.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the construction of the bridge \u2014 obviously there\u2019s Canadian steel and workers \u2014 but also U.S. steel and U.S. workers were involved. This is a great example of co-operation between our countries. We look forward to it opening,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ontario Premier Doug Ford<\/a> said he is \u201cvery confident this bridge is going to open.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the bridge would be good for jobs in her state.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the busiest trade crossing in North America. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is all about jobs. It\u2019s good for Michigan workers and it\u2019s good for Michigan\u2019s auto industry,\u201d she said in a statement, adding that union construction workers from both sides of the border were involved in construction and that the bridge will be operated under a joint ownership agreement between Michigan and Canada.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project has been a tremendous example of bipartisan and international cooperation. It\u2019s going to open one way or another, and the governor looks forward to attending the ribbon cutting,\u201d Whitmer added.<\/p>\n

The Detroit Regional Chamber said the bridge \u201cwould not have been possible without the partnership of the Canadian government.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada is more than a neighbor; it is critical to our economic future. There is no greater example of that than the international bridge,\u201d Sandy K. Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said Trump\u2019s threat is \u201cjust insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Gordie Howe International Bridge has come to life over the course of 25 years, with successive U.S. presidents and Canadian prime ministers involved in the work to get this bridge constructed,\u201d he posted on social media.<\/p>\n

Industry Minister Melanie Joly said Canada was taking Trump\u2019s concerns seriously and that she was confident the two sides would be able to work through this.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen President Trump talks, we listen,\u201d Joly said Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m convinced that we will be able to work this through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan\u2019s Democratic Representative Debbie Dingell called on\u00a0 Trump to stop taking \u201ccheap shots\u201d at Canada, \u201cour friend and ally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis border is the busiest crossing between our two countries, and has been critical for not only Michigan jobs but also American jobs. Not to mention Canada paid for this bridge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bridge was negotiated by a Republican Governor, and in 2017 Trump endorsed the bridge calling it a \u2018vital economic link between our two countries\u2019. Nothing has changed,\u201d Dingell added.<\/p>\n

The state\u2019s Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin said cancelling the project will result in \u201chigher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe President\u2019s agenda for personal retribution should not come before what\u2019s best for us. Canada is our friend \u2014 not our enemy. And I will do everything in my power to get this critical project back on track,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce said Trump\u2019s move to block the bridge would be \u201ca self-defeating move.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trump administration was right in 2017 in its joint statement that endorsed the bridge as a priority project, calling it a \u2018vital economic link between our two countries.\u2019 Modern border infrastructure strengthens shared economic security. The path forward isn\u2019t deconstructing established trade corridors, it\u2019s actually building bridges,\u201d said Candaice Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n
