{"id":466674,"date":"2026-02-10T21:55:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T21:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/466674\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T21:55:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T21:55:18","slug":"they-dont-want-to-get-their-hands-dirty-how-basso-is-trying-to-fix-a-growing-problem-in-the-bike-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/466674\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;They don\u2019t want to get their hands dirty&#8217;: how Basso is trying to fix a growing problem in the bike industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cycling brands across the globe are grappling with universal challenges of rising costs, post-Covid stock issues and geopolitical disruptions, but brands manufacturing in Europe face a unique challenge \u2013 attracting a new generation of talent into the cycling industry.<\/p>\n<p>For Italian brand Basso, this could become a serious issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s obviously more and more people that want to have office jobs and\u2026 don&#8217;t want to get their hands dirty,\u201d explains product and marketing manager Leonardo Basso.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To tackle this, Basso, which manufactures its bikes in Italy, co-founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stravarda.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Stravarda Foundation<\/a> in Bassano del Grappa in late 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A collaboration between Selle Royal Group and Stardue Group \u2013 Basso\u2019s parent company \u2013 the foundation says its aim is to generate a \u201cpositive and lasting impact on the community\u201d by promoting active, sustainable living while creating practical pathways into cycling-related work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExpertise is really hard to find\u201d<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Basso-BikeRadar-advertorial-2025-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-940687\"\/>Basso is working to bring more of its production operations closer to home. Basso<\/p>\n<p>The launch of the foundation comes against the backdrop of Basso\u2019s wider effort to bring more of its production operations back together.<\/p>\n<p>Basso explains that, as the brand grew internationally, parts of the business became more dispersed. Now, it wants to bring manufacturing, painting and logistics closer together.<\/p>\n<p>However, the physical relocation only works if people are willing and able to do the work. \u201cExpertise is really hard to find,\u201d Leonardo Basso explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Basso is keen to attract a younger generation to the industry, who can \u201cjoin early, and grow with the growth of the company\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is where Basso feels the long-term value of the Stravarda foundation will be: \u201cThe goal of this foundation is really to look at the future of our industry and ensure it&#8217;s sustainable for everybody.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The foundation says it will promote \u201cpathways for social and professional inclusion in the cycling sector, offering people in vulnerable circumstances the opportunity to acquire skills related to bicycle-industry professions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Basso-BikeRadar-advertorial-2025-16.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-940696\"\/>Basso acknowledges its Clubhouse is a great way to bring people closer to the brand \u2013 but the benefit goes beyond sales. Basso<\/p>\n<p>This includes working with young people, supporting educational projects, and creating routes into bike mechanics, production and related trades. \u201cPeople that\u2026 maybe don&#8217;t have a direction in their life, through this foundation \u2013 and through cycling \u2013 they could find their way,\u201d explains Leonardo Basso.<\/p>\n<p>An important part of the programme is also cultural, promoting road safety, respect and engagement with cycling as everyday transport rather than just sport.<\/p>\n<p>Basso says that at the base level, the foundation also wants to promote the strong culture of cycling in the Bassano region \u2013 which hosts many cycling companies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Stravarda plans to invest in redeveloping natural areas, supporting trail networks and encouraging tourism linked to cycling and outdoor activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur area is so strong for cycling and the culture of cycling is so rooted in the area \u2013 that\u2019s why there&#8217;s so many companies in the area,\u201d Leonardo Basso says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously growing an international business is important, but then focusing on doing something in the area, for the territory, will benefit everybody that lives there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explains that as \u201ca sport of passion\u201d, jobs in manufacturing or logistics at the company generally attract cyclists, which gives the industry an edge over other sectors. Basso\u2019s hope is that the work will support cycling participation in the area, which will have a long-term benefit for brands manufacturing in the region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those that enter the company at a young age, he describes a largely apprenticeship-style pathway into the company that he\u2019s keen to grow, with experienced staff mentoring younger recruits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re lucky because we have people that grew up in the company and now\u2026 are the mentors of the new younger people that join the business,\u201d Basso says, adding that the average age of staff in the company is a lower-than-average 40.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStep-by-step, new staff get taught and become professionals in what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing in Italy, in a global industry<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2400\" height=\"1600\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Basso-BikeRadar-advertorial-2025-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-940684\"\/>For Basso, building bikes in Italy is about more than heritage.
