George Clooney isn’t really a sneakers guy. He often settles on suede chukkas and worn-in derbies. But on the rare occasion that he does opt for casual shoes, they’re generally worth paying attention to.<\/p>\n

Case in point: catching a flight out of Milan this weekend, Clooney arrived to the airport in a seriously underrated pair of Adidas Rod Laver low-tops. <\/p>\n

First released in 1970, the original version of the court sneakers were made in collaboration with Rod Laver, Australian tennis legend and 11-time Grand Slam winner, during his globe-conquering pomp. Dubbed \u201cRocket\u201d by Davis Cup captain Harry Hopman, Laver was the first player to bank $1 million in prize money. In short: few players are more deserving of their own shoe. <\/p>\n

Like Adidas’ more famous tennis trainer, the Stan Smith, the Rod Laver design comes with a portrait of the former pro on the tongue. It hasn\u2019t changed all that much over the past half-century, although there have been collaborative updates from the likes of Kith and Consortium. <\/p>\n

“I felt that the design of the common tennis shoe could be improved,” Laver told Forbes in 2021, discussing the original thinking behind the shoe. “Canvas uppers suffered from daily clay court use. The clay would stick to the shoes and quickly discolor. I suggested that a non-stick material like a nylon mesh would improve the performance and the daily presentation of a sports shoe. That’s the genesis of the Adidas Rod Laver model.” <\/p>\n

While the Stan Smith went on to become the most famous tennis shoe in the world, the Rod Laver has remained an IYKYK style amongst sneakerheads. Here’s the bad news: The shoes that Clooney is catching flights in\u2014with the Three Stripes on the side, and a full leather upper\u2014aren’t easy to get ahold of in the States. But Adidas frequently updates its stock levels, while Lyst in the UK is currently stocking them for \u00a383<\/a>. Or, you could simply opt for the classic version<\/a>, which is equally great. <\/p>\n
