RCMP say there are \u201cmultiple victims\u201d in a shooting at the Tumbler Ridge<\/a> Secondary School in British Columbia\u2019s Peace region.<\/p>\n

RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark confirms in a text message that there are victims in what police have called an \u201cactive shooter\u201d situation; however, he couldn\u2019t say how many people are involved or the extent of their injuries.<\/p>\n

RCMP in Tumbler Ridge issued an emergency alert on Tuesday afternoon for an active shooter<\/a> following reports of a shooting at a school.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs of 1:20 p.m., the Tumbler Ridge RCMP are currently on scene of a confirmed active shooter incident at the Tumbler Ridge Secondary School,\u201d RCMP said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The active shooter alert was lifted at 5:46 p.m. PT.<\/p>\n

The suspect was originally described as a female in a dress with brown hair, but in an updated release, police said the original suspect is believed to have been located deceased.<\/p>\n

\u201cWork continues to determine whether a second suspect was involved and the total number of victims involved,\u201d RCMP said.<\/p>\n

In a post on social media, School District 59 said it was aware of a lockdown and secure and hold at Tumbler Ridge Secondary and Tumbler Ridge Elementary.<\/p>\n

Just after 5 p.m. PT, Tumbler Ridge Elementary School confirmed that they can release their students to their parents or guardians.<\/p>\n

BC\u00a0Emergency Health Services from surrounding areas also responded, they confirmed.<\/p>\n

Alberta-based STARS Air Ambulance, which airlifts critically sick and injured patients to hospital, confirmed it sent a crew from Grande Prairie to help in Tumbler Ridge.<\/p>\n

The District of Tumbler Ridge issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon, saying that the community \u201cexperienced a deeply distressing incident. Our hearts are with all those affected, and we recognize that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared, and overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The district said they are grateful for the swift response of local emergency services and first responders and additional support is already in the community or on its way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the days ahead, we know this will be difficult for many to process,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease check in on one another, lean on available supports, and know that Tumbler Ridge is a strong and caring community. We will get through this together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Longtime resident Garret Golhof told Global News he has never seen anything like this in his community.<\/p>\n

\u201cI right away locked the doors like I said, and I told the care aid there had been a shooting and she found out that her granddaughter had been injured in this and taken to the clinic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can still hear helicopters overhead.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, Larry Neufeld, the MLA for Peace River South, said he is leaving Victoria immediately to return to his riding.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been in direct contact with the Solicitor General to receive updates and to ensure all necessary provincial resources are being made available to support local law enforcement and emergency responders,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic safety is the absolute priority. I urge everyone in the area to follow RCMP instructions, remain sheltered, and rely only on official updates.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tumbler Ridge is located in northeastern B.C., south of Chetwynd.<\/p>\n

The provincial government website lists Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as having 175 students from grades 7 to 12.<\/p>\n
