{"id":467867,"date":"2026-02-11T10:56:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:56:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/467867\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T10:56:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T10:56:18","slug":"comments-pour-in-after-nunavut-mp-asks-about-housing-wait-lists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/467867\/","title":{"rendered":"Comments pour in after Nunavut MP asks about housing wait-lists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lori Idlout\u2019s Facebook post flooded with comments after she asks Nunavummiut for their experiences <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been on the waiting list for 11 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waited 10 years to get a two bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI applied when I turned 18; I\u2019m turning 30 in six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These are just a small sampling of the more than 700 comments that flooded in under a Feb. 2 Facebook post from Nunavut MP Lori Idlout, asking Nunavummiut how many of them had been on a housing waiting list and for how long.<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine Nagiyak has been on the waiting for nearly six years, she said Thursday. She also commented on Idlout\u2019s post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want the best for me and my daughter and my partner to have our own place to call home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Nagiyak, her husband Simon Enuapik Jr. and their two-year-old daughter Monica Nagiyak have been living between Whale Cove and Arviat for the past two years, since her daughter was born. They recently moved in with Enuapik\u2019s family in Whale Cove, where they share a three-bedroom with seven other people.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260130-gn-appointment-nsrt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1770713368_348_A-14680.95.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prior to this living situation, the family lived with Nagiyak\u2019s mother in Arviat with six other people in a two-bedroom home.<\/p>\n<p>Nagiyak said living in overcrowded housing can strain finances and cause family problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to talk about it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Idlout said in an interview that she was surprised by the flood of responses to her query.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government announced in January a plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/ottawa-lines-up-partners-to-build-750-nunavut-homes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">build 750 homes<\/a> in the territory in co-ordination with the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Idlout said that\u2019s not enough to solve Nunavut\u2019s housing shortage.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/260206-marketplace\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/260206.100.98.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would be enough,\u201d she said, \u201cis guarantees that housing will be funded on a permanent basis to housing needs right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal government\u2019s current funding model for the territory does not include any specific allocation to housing, Idlout said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is not enough funding in the first place and that\u2019s why we\u2019ve ended up in this scenario where we\u2019ve got hundreds and hundreds of people that have been on waiting lists for [decades],\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Former Nunavut premier P.J. Akeeagok announced the territorial government\u2019s plan in 2022 to alleviate the housing shortage. Called Nunavut 3000, the goal was to build 3,000 units by 2030 for $2.6 billion. The federal government\u2019s January announcement will count toward this goal.<\/p>\n<p>Over 60 per cent of Nunavummiut live in public housing. Nearly half of those homes \u2014 45 per cent \u2014 are considered to be overcrowded, according to a May 2025 report from the auditor general of Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/ads\/2025-gn-annual-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"373\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2025_GN_annual_sidebar.png\" class=\"no-lazy-load wp-post-image\" title=\"\" aria-hidden=\"true\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/lack-of-transparency-poor-maintenance-and-considerable-challenges-for-nunavut-3000\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The auditor general\u2019s<\/a> report stated there were 3,348 applicants on the wait list for housing as of March 2025.<\/p>\n<p>According to data provided by the Nunavut Housing Corp. on Friday, the average wait time for a home is five-plus years.
