Both types\u00a0of COVID-19 vaccine\u00a0are recommended\u00a0and safe to receive\u00a0during\u00a0any stage of\u00a0pregnancy\u00a0to protect\u00a0both maternal and infant health.\u00a0<\/p>\nResearchers from the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network studied 434 children between the ages of\u00a018 months\u00a0and\u00a030 months\u00a0for signs of autism or other neurodevelopmental problems.\u00a0In this multi-center prospective observational study conducted between May 2024\u00a0and\u00a0March 2025, half of the children (217) were born to mothers who had received at least one dose of the mRNA vaccine during or within 30 days prior to pregnancy; the other half were born to mothers who had not received mRNA vaccination during or within\u00a030\u00a0days\u00a0prior to pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Neurodevelopment outcomes in children born to mothers who received the COVID-19 vaccine during or shortly before pregnancy did not differ from those born to mothers who did not receive the vaccine,” said senior researcher George R. Mothers who received the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine were matched with mothers who did not receive the vaccine based on the delivery site where they gave birth (hospital, birth center, etc.), delivery date, insurance status, and race. Participants were excluded from both\u00a0study\u00a0groups if they delivered preterm under\u00a037 weeks, if they had a multifetal pregnancy, or had a child born with a major congenital malformation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Children born to both groups were tested for neurodevelopmental problems\u00a0at age 1 \u00bd – 2 \u00bd years,\u00a0using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire Version 3\u00a0that assesses and tracks child development\u00a0in five\u00a0main areas: communication, gross motor skills, fine motor skills, problem-solving, and personal-social interaction.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0the researchers compared the children’s\u00a0assessment\u00a0scores\u00a0from the Child Behavior Checklist,\u00a0Modified\u00a0Checklist for Autism in Toddlers,\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Early Childhood Behavior\u00a0Questionnaire.\u00a0<\/p>\n
