A rule change could be introduced to rein in the Mercedes power units used by the works team, McLaren, Williams, and Alpine.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The saga revolves around the hitherto-esoteric and largely unheralded world of power unit compression ratios. To put it simply, the FIA mandated a limit for the 2026 breed of engines, to be measured in the pits\u2014when they are cold. As it developed its new PU over the past couple years, Mercedes found a way to operate with a more favorable compression ratio out on track when running hot, yet which met the letter of law by being \u201clegal\u201d when measured cold. And it seemed to believe the FIA had no issues with what it was doing.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"2\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">However, a few weeks ago, it emerged that rivals Ferrari, Honda, and Audi had found out what Mercedes was doing, and had begun lobbying the FIA for a clampdown on the apparent loophole. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70012574\/ford-red-bull-f1-team-deep-bench\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70012574\/ford-red-bull-f1-team-deep-bench\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Red Bull Powertrains, whose Ford-backed PU\" data-node-id=\"2.1\" class=\"body-link css-r8qnsp emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Red Bull Powertrains, whose Ford-backed PU<\/a> has been designed in late part by former Mercedes personnel, was initially also targeted, and believed to be pursuing a similar route. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But in a surprise development, RBP has since changed camps and joined the group aligned against Mercedes. That has huge significance because of the \u201csuper majority\u201d voting arrangements in the sport\u2019s current governance: if four manufacturers, the FIA, and the F1 organization band together, they can vote through regulatory change against the opposition of the fifth manufacturer. That, in essence, is where we are now, with discussions and meetings ongoing. (One potential outcome could be the introduction of a compression ratio test with the engines running hot.)<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">What impact any rule change will ultimately have remains to be seen in terms of what Mercedes will have to do to comply. For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a42568743\/toto-wolff-ferrari-f40-for-sale\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a42568743\/toto-wolff-ferrari-f40-for-sale\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-r8qnsp emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff<\/a>, the situation is a massive headache on the eve of what is supposed to be a highly competitive year for the works team and its customers. And we have had all the assurances that what we did was according to the rule. It&#8217;s not even like we&#8217;re talking about some massive performance gain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">He insists that within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70300316\/mercedes-f1-driver-kimi-antonelli-car-crash-mercedes-amg-gt\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.roadandtrack.com\/news\/a70300316\/mercedes-f1-driver-kimi-antonelli-car-crash-mercedes-amg-gt\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"the Mercedes F1 team\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-r8qnsp emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Mercedes F1 team<\/a>, a focus on the compression ratio was not regarded as some kind of eureka moment, or silver bullet. \u201cIt was less of a topic internally,\u201d he says. \u201cBecause we didn&#8217;t think that this would make be such a performance differentiator, and we still think that today. So it was not like, \u2018What a great invention.\u2019 It became more of a topic when the other power unit manufacturers were making it a topic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Wolff is not impressed with the way rivals have come together in a joint effort to trip up his team. \u201cI think that the lobbying from the other engine manufacturers has massively ramped up over the over the last few months. I mean, secret meetings, secret letters to the FIA\u2014and obviously there&#8217;s no such thing as secret in the sport, ever! And that has brought it to this situation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Wolff believes rivals are simply worried about being outperformed and out-thought by Mercedes, and that the compression ratio was a useful hook on which to hang complaints. A distraction, you might say. \u201cI think everybody was a little bit too excited about the performance of the Mercedes-powered teams,\u201d said the Austrian. \u201cAnd I think that our colleagues from the other brands have been carried away a little bit, that this could be embarrassing\u2014which I don&#8217;t think it is at all. You need the votes from the governing body, and you need the votes from the commercial rights holder. And if they decided to share an opinion and an agenda, then you&#8217;re screwed.\u201d So far, there has been no public commitment from either party.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"12\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">There is a bigger picture at play. In the wake of all the hoopla around the 2026 rule changes, both the FIA and F1 need this season to work, with competitive racing, a close field at the front, and a good show. One team\u2014or even four teams\u2014sharing the same supply dominating the action is not what they, or most fans, want to see. That\u2019s why the rules already have a process to allow any PU makers lagging behind on development to catch up.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"13\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">There is also the question of keeping Honda, Audi, Ford and Ferrari (and even Alpine, Cadillac, and Haas partner Toyota) onside as the sport becomes a manufacturer playground. The situation also brings up the specter of balance of performance (BoP), as seen in other forms of racing, and so often surrounded by controversy. It is something F1 has steadfastly held off over the years\u2014the only gentle exception being the aero testing regulations that limit the wind tunnel hours of the successful teams, based on a league table.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Wolff suggests by targeting the compression ratio, F1 could be on a slippery slope towards reining in clever R&amp;D by the smarter teams\u2014which is what the sport has always been built upon. \u201cI would say that, within the sport, there are individuals who would want it to be a series with a BoP without calling it a BoP, by saying we actually don&#8217;t want engineering ingenuity, we prefer to have a level playing field\u2014and therefore, [there become] some rules that are invented on the fly that makes things even more complex. The very essence of F1 is to find performance, to attract the best engineers and the best people, give them freedom to develop regulations.
