A GoFundMe page for James Van Der Beek<\/a> has reached more than US$1 million in donations less than 24 hours after the actor\u2019s death<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Van Der Beek, known for his roles in \u201990s TV drama\u00a0Dawson\u2019s Creek\u00a0and movie\u00a0Varsity Blues, died on Wednesday at the age of 48, just over a year after being diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n

Shortly after news of his death spread, Van Der Beek\u2019s friends created a GoFundMe page<\/a> for his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their six children.<\/p>\n

The GoFundMe page said that the Van Der Beek family \u201cfaced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care\u201d throughout his illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James\u2019s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time,\u201d the page reads.<\/p>\n

The Van Der Beek family is asking for the \u201csupport of friends, family, and the wider community\u201d as they navigate the road ahead. Donations to the page will help cover \u201cessential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children\u2019s education.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives,\u201d the page reads.<\/p>\n

The GoFundMe post had raised more than $1.3 million of its $1.5-million goal from more than 27,000 donations as of Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

Several notable people in Hollywood have donated to Van Der Beek\u2019s GoFundMe, including Wicked\u00a0director Jon M. Chu, who donated $10,000, and Cameo co-founder Martin Blencowe, who also donated $10,000. Oscar-winning actor Zoe Saldana<\/a> donated $2,500 on a monthly basis and Lyn Lear, Norman Lear\u2019s<\/a> widow, also donated $5,000 on a monthly basis.<\/p>\n

Many stars mourned the loss of Van Der Beek with heartfelt tributes, including his former Dawson\u2019s Creek co-stars Katie Holmes<\/a> and Sasha Alexander.<\/p>\n

To share space with your imagination is sacred \u2014 breathing the same air in the land of make believe and trusting that each others\u2019 hearts are safe in their expression\u2026 These are some of the memories, along with laughter, conversations about life, James Taylor songs \u2014 adventures of a unique youth,\u201d Holmes wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI formed some words with a heavy heart. This is a lot to process. I am so grateful to have shared in a piece of James\u2019 journey. He is beloved. Kimberly, we love you and will be here always for you and your beautiful children,\u201d she wrote in the caption of her post.<\/p>\n

Alexander, who played Gretchen Witter in the series, said what made\u00a0Dawson\u2019s Creek\u00a0special was \u201cthe man who played him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJames was a deep, thoughtful soul. He took his work seriously, not out of ego, but out of care. He cared about doing things well and he never took any of it for granted. But more than anything, he cared about people. He cared about his family. He cared about showing up fully,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Busy Philipps, who portrayed Audrey Liddell in the series, wrote on Instagram<\/a>, \u201cMy heart is deeply hurting for all of us today\u2026every person who knew James and loved him, anyone who loved his work or had the pleasure of meeting him, all of his dear friends and community that surrounded him as he battled this illness, especially his parents and brother and sister.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have colorectal cancer. I\u2019ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,\u201d the star told People.<\/p>\n

The actor did not give further details on his diagnosis, but shared in an Instagram post: \u201cI\u2019m in a good place and feeling strong<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last November, Van Der Beek parted ways with some of his Dawson\u2019s Creek\u00a0memorabilia<\/a> in a partnership with auction website Propstore.<\/p>\n

Van Der Beek, who starred as Dawson Leery in the hit show, was auctioning off items including wardrobe, props and set pieces, like Dawson Leery\u2019s flannel<\/a>,\u00a0the necklace<\/a> he wore in the series before he gifted it to Joey (Katie Holmes) and Van Der Beek\u2019s chair back<\/a>\u00a0from the set of the series.<\/p>\n

All of the proceeds from the items sold went to Van Der Beek to help \u201cwith the financial cost of fighting cancer,\u201d People reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An\u00a0increasing number of younger people<\/a>\u00a0are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer in Canada and the United States \u2014 even though overall cases and deaths have fallen in recent years.<\/p>\n

According to a 2023 study from the American Cancer Society, one in five cases diagnosed in 2019 were in people under 55, almost double the rate of 11 per cent in 1995.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a similar situation in Canada, where colorectal cancer is the\u00a0fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer<\/a>, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.<\/p>\n

Peter Stanich, a gastroenterologist with The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center<\/a>, says that colorectal cancer has been increasing in young people.<\/p>\n

\u201cPart of this is likely due to increasing obesity and changes in diets over time, but many people are still investigating the cause of this. It is still much less common than it is in older adults, but it is a worrisome trend,\u201d Stanich tells Global News. \u201cThis is the reason the screening age was reduced to age 45 from 50 in 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n

Colorectal cancer starts in the colon or rectum, which are part of the large intestine, and can also spread to other parts of the body.<\/p>\n

Stanich says that many colorectal cancers do not cause symptoms, which is why it is important to have the recommended screening test at the recommended age.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you are experiencing blood in the bowel movements or iron deficiency anemia \u2014 low blood counts due to low iron levels \u2014 these are concerning at any age and you need to discuss with your healthcare team and have a colonoscopy to be evaluated for colorectal cancer as well as other potential non-cancerous causes,\u201d Stanich says.<\/p>\n

Unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, smoking and alcohol consumption increase the risks for this type of cancer, but family history is also a contributing factor.<\/p>\n

\u201cA healthy diet with regular exercise will help reduce risk for colorectal cancer. A fish and vegetable-based diet with limited red meats or processed meats is the healthiest,\u201d Stanich adds. \u201cHowever, even if you eat very healthy and are very fit it is important to have colorectal cancer screening done, as these can occur even with the healthiest lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n
