Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid and the rest of the men\u2019s hockey team finally opened their Olympic tournament and defeated Czechia. According to Team Canada head coach Troy Ryan, it seems like she\u2019s on the mend and a couple extra days of rest could make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Thursday\u2019s game against Finland was a long time coming. He&#8217;s now won silvers at the 2014, 2022 and 2026 Olympics. (Photo by Tiziana FABI \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>(TIZIANA FABI via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych was barred from competing in Thursday\u2019s competition at the 2026 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He wasn\u2019t allowed to compete after he refused an IOC plea to have him switch helmets from one that <a data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.sports.yahoo.com\/news\/ukrainian-skeleton-racer-wear-helmet-124905723.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:honours more than 20 of his country\u2019s athletes and coaches killed in Ukraine\u2019s war with Russia;cpos:10;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">honours more than 20 of his country\u2019s athletes and coaches killed in Ukraine\u2019s war with Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">According to the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:11;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/race-day-arrives-ukraines-heraskevych-050611295.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Associated Press;cpos:11;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Press<\/a>, Heraskevych \u201creceived written word Thursday from the International Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, which said his decision to wear the helmet was \u2018inconsistent with the Olympic Charter and Guidelines on Athlete Expression.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The decision to bar Heraskevych from competing came roughly 45 minutes before the start of the competition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He knew refusing to switch helmets could endanger his Olympics, but still believes he isn\u2019t violating any such rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI believe, deeply, the IBSF and IOC understand that I\u2019m not violating any rules,\u201d Heraskevych told AP. \u201cAlso, I would say (it&#8217;s) painful that it really looks like discrimination because many athletes already were expressing themselves. &#8230; They didn&#8217;t face the same things. So, suddenly, just the Ukrainian athlete in this Olympic Games will be disqualified for the helmet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Shortly after the decision was made to disallow Heraskevych from competing, Ulla Zirne, a Latvian luger who competed at the 2014 and 2022 Winter Olympics made a post on social media expressing how \u201cashamed\u201d she was for once believing in the Olympic system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The men\u2019s skeleton event got started on Thursday with the first two heats. It will conclude Friday. She finished in eighth place. Liliane Gagnon, Sonjaa Schmidt and Katherine Stewart-Jones finished the race 17th, 34th and 47th, respectively. The event was won by Sweden&#8217;s Frida Karlsson. Her fellow Swede Ebba Andersson took silver, while the United States&#8217; Jessie Diggins claimed bronze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Women&#8217;s 5000 M speed skating: Canada&#8217;s Isabelle Weidemann finished fifth in the women&#8217;s 5,000-metre speed skating event Thursday at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Fellow Canadian Laura Hall ended her race in ninth place. Italy&#8217;s Francesca Lollobrigida won the gold medal, the silver went to Merel Conijn of the Netherlands and Norway&#8217;s Ragne Wiklund captured the bronze.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Women&#8217;s halfpipe snowboard: Elizabeth Hosking had a rough time in the women&#8217;s snowboard halfpipe final, finishing in 11th place.
