Britney Spears has sold her music catalogue<\/a> for a rumored $200 million \u2013 in a deal that is all about \u201ccorrecting history\u201d, Page Six is told.<\/p>\n

The biggest pop star of the 2000s \u2013 whose headline-grabbing personal history has frequently overshadowed her work \u2013\u00a0and those around her\u00a0are now striving to \u201chonor her\u00a0legacy\u201d.<\/p>\n

At 44, Mississippi-born Spears has seemingly lived multiple lifetimes, from \u201cMickey Mouse Club\u201d kid to chart-topping sexpot and embattled fixture of the tabloids.<\/p>\n

But after signing the deal with Primary Wave,\u00a0a private music publishing company based in New York City, she has made the first move to ensure she will forever be a legend.<\/p>\n

Britney Spears has sold her catalogue to the tune of $200 million \u2013 and it will prove her legacy as one of the pop greats, friends say. WireImage<\/p>\n

The former Mickey Mouse Club star turned teenage icon with her 1998 \u201cHit Met Baby\u2026One More Time\u201d and its sizzling video,<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is Britney f\u2014ing Spears, who shaped pop culture, influenced every artist, and still does,\u201d as a friend told Page Six. \u201cIt\u2019s not all about the drama, and it\u2019s time for the world to treat her with some f\u2014ing respect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spears made the deal official on Dec. 30, according to legal records. It means she signed away her share of the rights to her most famous hits including \u201c\u2026 Baby One More Time,\u201d and \u201cOops! \u2026 I Did It Again,\u201d but she retains all rights to her name, image and likeness.<\/p>\n

So, what does it all mean for the \u201cToxic\u201d singer \u2013 and why choose to sell now?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is about honoring her legacy,\u201d said the friend, simply.<\/p>\n

Forbes calculated<\/a> the Primary Wave deal has doubled Spears\u2019 personal fortune \u2014 estimating she now has a net worth of around $150 million.<\/p>\n

The outlet last estimated Spears\u2019 net worth at $60 million in 2021 \u2014 far below pop stars like Taylor Swift, Beyonc\u00e9, and Rihanna, all of whom are now billionaires.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After years of estrangement, Spears is attempting to rebuild her relationship with her sons. She\u2019s seen with Jayden James in January and the pair spent Christmas together. britneyspears\/Instagram<\/p>\n

The star is also back in touch with her oldest son Sean Preston. britneyspears\/Instagram<\/p>\n

But none of them have undergone anything remotely as traumatic as Spears, who was forced to pay out millions in legal fees trying to free herself from her father Jamie\u2019s control.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2008, Spears was involuntarily placed in a conservatorship managed by Jamie and a lawyer, and spent 13 years with no control of her assets or finances. After a public campaign and numerous court hearings she was \u00a0\u00a0released from the conservatorship in 2021.\u00a0<\/a>She claimed she was \u201clucky to be alive\u201d<\/a> and blamed her own family for mistreating her.<\/p>\n

Madonna \u2013 who famously shared a kiss with Spears at the MTV Awards in 2003 \u2013 has been a big supporter of the singer, saying \u201cGive this woman her life back\u201d amid her conservatorship battle. She also attended her 2022 wedding to Sam Asghiri. Getty Images<\/p>\n

\u201cThirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself\u2026 my father and his associates having control over my body and my money \u2026 makes me feel sick,\u201d Spears wrote in her 2023 memoir, \u201cThe Woman in Me\u201d.<\/p>\n

Court documents in 2020 revealed her assets were mostly held in various brokerage accounts, real estate and cash.\u00a0<\/p>\n

While under conservatorship, Spears delivered four albums and four world tours, as well as a Las Vegas residency that ran from 2013 to 2017, grossing $137.7 million. However, her public mental health breakdown and scandal surrounding the conservatorship pushed brand deals away, which hit Spears\u2019 earnings hard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spears lashed out at her ex-husband Kevin Federline last year when he made a series of outrageous claims in his memoir. Splashnews.com<\/p>\n

Her last album, \u201cGlory,\u201d was released in 2016, and she hasn\u2019t been on the road since the 2018 \u201cPiece of Me\u201d tour.<\/p>\n

Forbes estimated that Spears earned about $170 million from the Primary Wave deal before taxes, but after fees paid to her team, her post-tax take-home pay will be closer to $70 million.<\/p>\n

Until September 2024, Britney was also spending $5 million a year as part of an agreement with her former husband, Kevin Federline, who had custody of their sons Sean Preston, now 20, and Jayden James, now 19. The agreement ended <\/a>on Jayden\u2019s 18th birthday.<\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s certainly intriguing how Spears waited until now to sell her catalogue, we\u2019re told the timing has nothing to do with Federline. Last year he made a series of outlandish accusations against his ex in his memoir, including that she would stand over her young sons<\/a> as they slept while holding a knife.<\/p>\n

Spears quickly fired back,<\/a> saying Federline was merely still trying to \u201cprofit\u201d off her after the child support had ended. \u201cAll she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James and their well-being during this sensationalism,\u201d a statement read.<\/p>\n

The catalogue deal sweeps up all of Spears\u2019 greatest hits, including her 2003 song, \u201cToxic\u201d, for which she played an air hostess in one of her most famous videos.<\/p>\n

She also wore a glittering nude bodysuit for the \u201cToxic\u201d video.<\/p>\n

\u201cKevin has nothing to do with the music,\u201d noted a source in the know.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite everything \u2013 including, we\u2019re told, Spears\u2019 business affairs being \u201cmismanaged\u201d by former managers \u2013 \u201cShe is not and has not been low on money at all,\u201d the friend insisted, \u201cit had nothing to do with her current financial situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the majority of her career, Spears, who has sold nearly 150 million records, was signed to Jive Records. Following a restructuring in 2011, she was moved to RCA Records.<\/p>\n

Since her conservatorship ended, Spears has not been under any legal care, and has posted multiple videos and photos of her dancing bizarrely on Instagram. Britney Spears\/Instagram<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was only making 2-3 percent royalties on her three biggest first albums. Most artists get 20-25 percent, so it was really about course correcting history,\u201d the friend added.<\/p>\n

Although Spears has written songs on the majority of her albums, apart from \u201cEverytime\u201d she is not credited as a writer on her biggest hits, meaning her cut of the profits from sales, radio play and streaming is less than stars who write all their own material.<\/p>\n

Clayton Durant, Adjunct Professor of Music Business at Long Island University\u2019s Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment explained that Britney\u2019s deal with Primary Wave represents a new chapter, \u201cone in which Britney was able to make a decision about her music on her own terms,\u201d Durant added.<\/p>\n

The star likes to flaunt herself on instagram from her home in Thousand Oaks, CA.<\/p>\n

Most artists also make their money from touring now, and many say now would be a great time for Spears to come back.<\/p>\n

And the mid-2000s heyday of Britney\u2019s career is having a resurgence in popular culture too, making her a star in prime position for a comeback.<\/p>\n

Alongside that, we\u2019re told there is now a script for the movie version of Spears\u2019 memoir, with \u201cWicked\u201d director Jon M. Chu at the helm.<\/p>\n

Chu has promised\u00a0to \u201cdo her justice\u201d, noting Spears will be \u201cvery involved\u201d in the film\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-nominated director said he wants to explore how the public treats female stars. \u00a0<\/p>\n

As a music insider told us, \u201cLet\u2019s be honest, there\u2019s still a huge amount of sexism in the music industry, if Britney had got up in her underwear and sang off-key like Justin Bieber just did at the Grammys, people would say she\u2019s crazy,\u201d<\/p>\n

As Page Six has reported, friends have had very real fears for \u201cfragile\u201d Spears <\/a>after the end of her short-lived marriage to Sam Asghari <\/a>in July 2023, particularly as there has been no legal provision in place to care for her since the end of the conservatorship.<\/p>\n

She has seemingly used Instagram as her lifeline, giving fans a glimpse into her day-to-day life. But she has sparked fears by dancing with knives <\/a>\u2013 which she later clarified were props \u2013 and some people have been confused by videos of herself dancing scantily-clad from her home in Thousand Oaks, CA.<\/p>\n

Spears, seen as a child, is estranged from her father Jamie Spears, who ruled over her for 13 years, and barely sees her mom Lynne Spears. Britney Spears<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is doing great and has been with her boys a lot and hanging out with friends,\u201d however, her friend said, \u201cShe is in an amazing, amazing place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether that means she\u2019ll be recording a new album or getting ready to tour again, remains to be seen, but fans are hopeful of a new era for Britney.<\/p>\n
