The City of Yellowknife is inviting residents to share their thoughts on a proposed drop-and-go beverage recycling station.<\/p>\n

The NWT government is hoping to open the station<\/a> at the end of 51 Street, beside the Aspen Apartments public housing complex<\/a>, as part of plans to expand and improve its beverage container recycling program.<\/p>\n

As the proposal requires an amendment to the city\u2019s zoning bylaw, it has to go through a public hearing and be approved by councillors before the city may grant it a development permit.<\/p>\n

The city plans to hold a public hearing<\/a> at City Hall on Wednesday, February 25 at noon.<\/p>\n

The city is holding a separate public hearing<\/a> on the same day regarding a proposal to amend Yellowknife\u2019s community plan to redesignate approximately 8.8 hectares of vacant land from \u201cEngle Industrial Business District\u201d to \u201cKam Lake\u201d to allow for development.<\/p>\n

The municipality is asking people interested in presenting at either hearing to get in touch with the city clerk before noon on February 25. People unable to attend a hearing may authorize another person to attend and speak on their behalf.<\/p>\n

Residents can also submit their thoughts on the proposals to the city clerk in writing by email<\/a> or fax to 867-920-5649 before 4:30pm on Wednesday, February 18.<\/p>\n

The recycling station would consist of a machine-operated, modified seacan with a kiosk that allows customers to enter their Bottle Shop Recycling Depot account information and temporarily unlock a chute door to enable drop-off.<\/p>\n

The NWT government\u2019s proposal includes security cameras, solar panels, an emergency exit chute door that can be opened if someone climbs inside the seacan, and three parking stalls. <\/p>\n

The territory said the recycling station would reduce the need for people to travel to the uptown Bottle Shop and could increase both the number of containers recycled and awareness of recycling.<\/p>\n
