\n\tNearly a year after his unexpected dismissal from Foo Fighters<\/a>, Josh Freese says he has \u201ca lot to say\u201d about the situation \u2014 but is choosing his words carefully.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a new interview with Modern Drummer<\/a> (via Louder Sound), the veteran percussionist addressed his May 2025 exit from the band, which came two years after he officially joined as their touring and recording drummer following the death of Taylor Hawkins in March 2022.<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese\u2019s tenure formally began in May 2023, after he appeared with the group at their London and Los Angeles tribute concerts for Hawkins. He went on to serve as drummer for the band\u2019s 2023 album, But Here We Are.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn May 2025, Freese revealed that Foo Fighters had decided \u201cto go in a different direction with their drummer,\u201d adding at the time that \u201cno reason was given\u201d for the decision.<\/p>\n

\n\tNow, he says he has his own thoughts about what happened but is hesitant to share them publicly.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe Foo Fighters are such a big, mainstream band that everything I say gets taken out of context, reposted, and blown out of proportion,\u201d Freese told Modern Drummer. \u201cPeople created headlines from one quick, simple comment I made on a podcast not long ago, it\u2019s crazy. I\u2019ve got to be careful about what I say about it. But I\u2019ve got a lot to say about it and I\u2019ve been just trying to figure out how and when, to go about really articulating it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have a couple small theories [as to why I was let go],\u201d he continued, \u201cbut I can\u2019t really go into them right now. I did really enjoy the two years I spent with those guys however, and they were good to me\u2026 until they weren\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese said his time in the band had been largely positive, describing Dave Grohl as a bandleader he \u201cloved\u201d working with.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI enjoyed being around those guys,\u201d he said. \u201cThey were generous and good to me\u2026 and that\u2019s what makes the whole thing even more of a mystery. I think I\u2019m a pretty good read on people, and I did not see that coming.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOne day it was nothing but laughs, we\u2019re on stage and Dave\u2019s looking at me every night like, \u2018You\u2019re killing it, dude!!!\u2019 And then it was just \u2013 over.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFreese also recalled the day he learned of his firing, saying he was spending time with members of A Perfect Circle and Primus when the news broke. \u201cEveryone was in shock and asking me what the hell happened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing his departure, Foo Fighters announced Ilan Rubin as their new drummer, with Rubin appearing on the band\u2019s single \u201cAsking For A Friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the high-profile exit, Freese said he has quickly moved forward. He is currently performing again with Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle, in addition to working in the studio with artists including Danny Elfman and Billy Idol.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSomeone recently said to me, \u2018Man, you\u2019ve had a tough year.\u2019 And I thought, Really?\u201d Freese said. \u201cSo the Foo Fighters thing is over. Big deal, that was a blip. The fact that I\u2019ve been touring with Nine Inch Nails and A Perfect Circle again, playing some shows with Weezer, working in the studio with everyone from Danny Elfman to Billy Idol.<\/p>\n
