{"id":478078,"date":"2026-02-16T07:32:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T07:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/478078\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T07:32:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T07:32:27","slug":"b-c-2026-budget-neither-big-cuts-nor-tax-increase-minister-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/478078\/","title":{"rendered":"B.C. 2026 budget \u2018neither\u2019 big cuts nor tax increase, minister says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British Columbia\u2019s finance minister says this year\u2019s upcoming budget is focused on protecting core services, but added it is a budget that is neither full of big cuts nor a large rise in taxes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Brenda Bailey told reporters during a pre-budget presentation Sunday that the budget was one crafted for \u201cvery serious times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many who have expressed to me that now is the time to make big cuts and bring the deficit down quickly and there are others who strongly hold the view we should be raising taxes and doubling down on providing even more services than we\u2019re doing right now, and this budget is neither of those things,\u201d Bailey said.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey\u2019s comments come days after Shannon Salter, deputy minister to Premier David Eby, said in an email that B.C. has an <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11668687\/bc-deficit-unsustainable-budget-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u201cunsustainable provincial budget deficit.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>A recent background briefing authorized by the premier\u2019s office and delivered to reporters noted that the deficit is too high, but the government is committed to protecting core services while creating financial room for any unforeseen economic eventualities.<\/p>\n<p>Current forecasts peg the provincial deficit at $11.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if this year\u2019s deficit would be higher or lower than last year\u2019s, Bailey said she would talk about it in the budget but said the plan is for it to decrease year over year and something that will \u201ctake time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>The minister told reporters that the government has been investing in building for the province \u2013 ranging from new hospitals and schools to post-secondary education and housing \u2013 something they plan to protect with the budget.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'B.C. warns of public sector job cuts in upcoming budget'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/2026_02_10_PAUL_FINCH_WEB.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t5:23<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tB.C. warns of public sector job cuts in upcoming budget\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>She said those investments would continue, with education and health care named as the primary core services the government aims to protect. When he took office in 2022\/23, the debt was $89.4 billion, the Conservatives said in a release, but it is now projected to top $155 billion this fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Conservative finance critic Peter Milobar said recently that questions need to be raised as to where all the money has gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the government is previewing cuts and new difficulties for families in the upcoming budget, it\u2019s a question that must be asked,\u201d Milobar said in a release. \u201cUnder this Eby government, announcements haven\u2019t translated into actions or outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s preview of the budget was the first real glimpse into what was coming. The speech from the throne, delivered this past week, focused on helping the community of <a href=\"http:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tumbler-ridge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tumbler Ridge recover<\/a> after a school shooting left nine people dead, including the killer.\u00a0Six of the victims were under 13 years old, five of whom died at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Bailey was asked Sunday about supports for the community, including a new school after it was decided students would not return to the building following the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>She said that the budget had been \u201cin the can\u201d prior to Tuesday\u2019s tragedy, but said there is a contingency fund available for unexpected needs.
