{"id":478344,"date":"2026-02-16T10:50:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T10:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/478344\/"},"modified":"2026-02-16T10:50:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T10:50:10","slug":"israeli-shipping-giant-zim-to-be-sold-for-4-2-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/478344\/","title":{"rendered":"Israeli shipping giant ZIM to be sold for $4.2 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Israeli shipping giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/business-and-innovation\/article-879489\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ZIM<\/a> will be sold to a German-Israeli partnership comprising Hapag-Lloyd and FIMI Opportunity Funds for approximately $4.2 billion, the Israeli business news site Calcalist reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u200bAccording to the report, the German firm, which is currently the world&#8217;s fifth-largest shipping company, will acquire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/zim\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ZIM<\/a>\u2019s international operations, while FIMI will take charge of local Israeli operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u200bUnder the deal, Hapag-Lloyd will begin operating ZIM\u2019s 99 chartered ships, while FIMI will take ownership of the 16 Israeli-flagged vessels currently operated by ZIM.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u200bThe inclusion of FIMI as an Israeli partner was intended to bypass the &#8220;golden share&#8221; owned by the Israeli government, which would have likely vetoed a fully international takeover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">According to a report by Globes, the acquisition was initially expected to be valued at $3 billion, slightly above ZIM\u2019s current $2.7 billion market value. Calcalist reported that the ZIM board has since approved the $4.2 billion price tag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph-section article-body-paragraph\">\u200bGlobes also noted that both employees and political officials have opposed the deal, with the workers&#8217; committee stating it was surprised to learn the deal had closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/tags\/haifa\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haifa<\/a> Mayor Yona Yahav also opposed the move, telling Globes that \u201cZIM Shipping Company, headquartered in Haifa, is no longer part of the Israeli economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u201cThis is a company whose existence is of strategic significance to the economy and security of the State of Israel, and which has thousands of employees &#8211; a large part of whom live in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/article-885658\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Haifa<\/a>.
