ANNAPOLIS, Md. \u2013 Coming home after a near-upset yesterday, the Navy women’s tennis team (7-4) rolled to a pair of wins in a Sunday doubleheader at the Tose Family Tennis Center, stifling Villanova (4-5) by a 6-1 score before posting a 7-0 victory over George Mason (3-1).

\nHighlighted by sophomore Emma Gu<\/a> and freshman Nicole Fu<\/a> both going a combined 3-0 for the day, the Midshipmen posted a 15-2 record on Sunday between doubles and singles play to continue their dominance over the Wildcats and Patriots.

\nNavy sprinted out to an early edge as junior Anna Jordaan<\/a> and sophomore Peyton Amspacher-Philemon<\/a> grabbed a 6-1 win over the No. 2 Villanova pairing of Lauren Monti and Jenna Stevens, while Fu and junior Olivia Fermo<\/a> clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory on the top court against Maggie Gehrig and Emily Callahan.

\nGu then got the Mids going in singles play with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Gehrig at the No. 2 spot, but Alina Kornyeva pulled out a 6-4, 6-2 win against freshman Jina Cha<\/a> on the sixth court to put the Wildcats on the board. Sophomore Molly Bellia<\/a> put Navy on the edge of clinching the win when she beat Miriam Gondorova, 7-5, 6-4, in the three-spot and Amspacher-Philemon secured the Navy win by defeating Monti in the No. 5 position, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

\nClosing out play, sophomore Grace Li<\/a> posted a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Stevens on the fourth court and Fu held on against top Villanova player Olivia Corcoran, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.

\nThe Mids continued its run into the nightcap, as Bellia and rookie Anna Wiskowski<\/a> notched a 6-0 win over the No. 2 GMU duo of Maya Bayat and Brooklyn Siegel, while Gu and Fu partnered for a 6-1 victory against the top pairing of Cenan Liu and Mary Young to lock up the doubles point for Navy. George Mason avoided the doubles sweep by Ravaka Ramanantoanina and Noella Talarek knocking off the duo of Cha and sophomore Ji Soo Oh<\/a>, 6-3.

\nJunior Julia Lee<\/a> opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Talarek in the No. 5 matchup and Cha followed by beating Young on the fourth court, 6-0, 6-1, to propel Navy to a 3-0 lead. Oh then clinched Navy’s second win of the day when she defeated Ramanantoanina at the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-1, while Gu posted a top-of-the-lineup 6-3, 6-1 victory over Liu to continue the Navy roll.

\nEnding the day, Jordaan powered past Bayat at the No. 3 spot by a 6-3, 6-1 score while Fermo knocked off Rout in a 6-2, 6-4 decision on the second court.

\n“The Navy ladies played solid tennis today. As stated yesterday, it was important to use the Virginia Tech match as a springboard for our continued development. The coaching staff feels we did just that. Both teams today are well coached. Villanova is generally one of the top schools in the Big East and had just beaten our Patriot League foe Bucknell the day before, while Mason had started the spring at 3-0. Doubles had energy in both matches and it showed in the results, we got off on the right foot and singles today was good as well. In the matches we did go down in, we did a good job of staying the course, battling to grab the momentum back from our opponents. We’ll look to prep for another challenging weekend after a break on Monday.”
