Robert Duvall, the Oscar-winning actor best known for \u201cThe Godfather,\u201c \u201cApocalypse Now\u201d and many other tough-guy roles over an acclaimed screen career that spanned six decades, has died. He was 95.<\/p>\n
Duvall died \u201cpeacefully\u201d at his home in Middleburg, Virginia on Sunday, according to a statement sent by his public relations agency on behalf of his wife, Luciana.<\/p>\n
Duvall memorably played the Corleone family consigliere, or key adviser, in Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d earning his first of seven Academy Award nominations for the 1972 film before reprising the role two years later in \u201cThe Godfather Part II.\u201d<\/p>\n
A career built on versatility<\/p>\n
Born in San Diego, California \u2013 his father was a career naval officer \u2013 Duvall played a wide variety of roles, from cowboys to military men.<\/p>\n
He attended Principia College in Illinois and served in the army during the Korean War before moving to New York and studying drama under famed acting coach Sanford Meisner. During that period, he shared an apartment with Dustin Hoffman and hung out with Gene Hackman, another young actor who would go on to great success. Hackman died last year.<\/p>\n
Duvall appeared in a number of plays before being cast in the film version of \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d in the small but pivotal of Arthur \u201cBoo\u201d Radley in 1962. (He later named one of his dogs \u201cBoo.\u201d)<\/p>\n
An array of film roles followed, among them the bad guy opposite John Wayne in Wayne\u2019s lone Oscar-winning performance, \u201cTrue Grit\u201d; the part of Major Frank Burns in the Robert Altman movie \u201cM*A*S*H\u201d; and the lead in \u201cStar Wars\u201d director George Lucas\u2019 dystopian 1971 sci-fi directing debut, \u201cTHX 1138,\u201d in which Duvall (and everyone else) sported shaved heads.<\/p>\n
That came out the year before \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d and his role as Corleone family attorney Tom Hagen propelled Duvall into another echelon. The actor worked constantly thereafter, playing a network executive in the satire \u201cNetwork,\u201d and migrating to television in the blockbuster TV miniseries \u201cLonesome Dove.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duvall won an Oscar for portraying a country singer in the 1983 movie \u201cTender Mercies,\u201d in which he did his own singing.<\/p>\n

He also earned Academy Award nominations for playing a marine at odds with his family in \u201cThe Great Santini,\u201d and as Lt. Col. Kilgore in the Vietnam War epic \u201cApocalypse Now,\u201d which reunited him with Coppola and featured him delivering the oft-quoted line, \u201cI love the smell of napalm in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duvall noticeably skipped appearing in the long-delayed \u201cThe Godfather Part III\u201d in 1990, due to a pay dispute with Coppola, telling Bob Costas that Al Pacino was going to be paid five times the amount he was offered, which was \u201ctotally unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Later, in an interview with Larry King, Duvall called his decision not to appear in the third \u201cGodfather\u201d movie \u201ca matter of principle.\u201d<\/p>\n
Roles in other Westerns were also a part of his oeuvre, such as \u201cOpen Range\u201d opposite Kevin Costner, and his Emmy-winning role in another miniseries, \u201cBroken Trail.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duvall also became a filmmaker, writing, directing and costarring in the 1997 movie \u201cThe Apostle,\u201d about a troubled preacher, and later directing the films \u201cAssassination Tango\u201d and \u201cWild Horses.\u201d He was again nominated for an acting Oscar for his work in \u201cThe Apostle.\u201d<\/p>\n

He remained active well into the 2010s, earning his final Oscar nomination at 84 for \u201cThe Judge\u201d in 2014, and appearing in such films as \u201cJack Reacher\u201d and \u201cWidows.\u201d<\/p>\n
Duvall also played a number of historical figures during his career, including Robert E. Lee (\u201cGods and Generals\u201d), Joseph Stalin (in the HBO movie \u201cStalin\u201d) and Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann (\u201cThe Man Who Captured Eichmann\u201d).<\/p>\n
Married four times, Duvall\u2019s last marriage was to Argentinian actress-director Luciana Pedraza.<\/p>\n
Duvall had a history of supporting Republican candidates. He attended George W. Bush\u2019s inauguration, raised money for Mitt Romney\u2019s candidacy and narrated a video at the Republican National Convention in 2008.<\/p>\n
He was awarded the National Medal of Arts during the Bush administration in 2004.<\/p>\n
Duvall\u2019s representative\u2019s statement added on Monday that no formal service will be held. Instead, \u201cthe family encourages those who wish to honor his memory to do so in a way that reflects the life he lived by watching a great film, telling a good story around a table with friends, or taking a drive in the countryside to appreciate the world\u2019s beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n
