Participants compete in quadball try out event for transgender girls and women in Edmonton on Feb. 16, 2026 (CityNews)<\/p>\nA sports team for everyone, that\u2019s the message transgender girls and women in Edmonton are sending as a quadball event celebrates inclusion, confidence and a space to play.<\/p>\n
The Edmonton quadball association hosted a \u201ctry it\u201d day Monday, specifically for queer and transgender girls to learn and play the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m experiencing the pride community, so this is really fun to experience the sport,\u201d says Anna Duval, a participant.<\/p>\n
Quadball is a blend of handball and dodgeball with elements of soccer and basketball.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very good for team building, you have to pass to others so it\u2019s super fun to play,\u201d said Kasper Kashamon, another participant.<\/p>\n

While players competed, passed and ran down the court, the focus wasn\u2019t on winning.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of our participants that we see are really looking for, community, a place where they can play a sport, have all the benefits of sport, the social aspect, the physical aspect, the mental health aspect, where they can just run around and play,\u201d says Jasper Whitby, the organizer of the event.<\/p>\n
Monday\u2019s quadball event comes months after Alberta\u2019s legislation\u00a0banned transgender women and girls aged 12 and older from competing in\u00a0female-only sports.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had an increase in participation since the law came into place because they can\u2019t play in their usual sports,\u201d Whitby said.<\/p>\n
Participants say the event left them feeling welcomed, empowered and seen \u2014 something some have struggled to feel in the past.<\/p>\n
\u201cGrowing up I\u2019ve had my fair share with bullies about being nonbinary so just being in a space with people my age and in the same community is very fun,\u201d Duval said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important for everyone to have a safe space to be themselves,\u201d Avery Monderman said.<\/p>\n
Quadball is known as a gender inclusive sport internationally.\u00a0Organizers say, all people are accepted in the game.<\/p>\n
