A day of light snow in Edmonton will transform into heavy snowfall Monday night into Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Environment Canada, which issued a yellow snowfall warning for many parts of central and northern Alberta, is forecasting 15 to 25 centimetres of snow.<\/p>\n
Local amounts could exceed 30 cm, the weather authority warns.<\/p>\n
The snow is expected to subside by Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
\u201cTravel will likely be challenging,\u201d the Environment Canada alert reads. \u201cThere may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Allow extra time for travel.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile mild temperatures will give way to a period of intense cold this week, prompting the City of Edmonton to activate its extreme weather response. <\/p>\n
The response began Monday at 9 a.m. and is scheduled to last until Feb. 27 at 9 a.m. <\/p>\n
Consistent lows of minus-23 Celsius are expected for the week, with temperatures dropping to minus-27 C on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
During the response, open city facilities like libraries and recreation centres will be available for anyone who needs a respite from the cold during regular operation periods.<\/p>\n
