dollar index<\/a> rose 0.2% against a basket of currencies, making greenback-priced bullion more expensive for holders of other currencies.<\/p>\n“Traders are currently in a wait-and-see mode…safe-haven demand has paused as \u200cmarkets await greater clarity from the U.S.\u2013Iran talks, while expectations for the Federal Reserve’s rate path could be influenced by the \u200brelease of the latest\u00a0FOMC\u00a0minutes,” said ActivTrades analyst\u00a0Ricardo Evangelista.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0U.S.\u00a0and\u00a0Iran\u00a0will hold indirect nuclear talks in\u00a0Geneva\u00a0on Tuesday, with little clear indication of compromise as\u00a0Washington\u00a0masses a \u2060battle force in the\u00a0Middle East.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ukrainian and Russian representatives will also meet in \u200cGeneva on Tuesday and Wednesday for\u00a0U.S.-mediated \u200cpeace discussions.<\/p>\n
Investors will also scrutinise minutes of the Fed’s January meeting, due Wednesday, for further clues on its interest rate-cutting path.<\/p>\n
The market currently expects the first interest rate \u2060cut for the year to be in June, as per CME’s FedWatch \u2060Tool. Non-yielding bullion tends to do well in low-interest rate \u2060environments.<\/p>\n
“Against a backdrop of geopolitical and economic uncertainty, which is likely to support safe-haven demand over the medium to long term, \u200band dovish expectations for the \u200cU.S. dollar, I see\u00a0gold\u00a0prices consolidating above the\u00a0$5,000\u00a0level and extending their advance towards\u00a0$6,000\u00a0as the year progresses,” Evangelista added.<\/p>\n
