Five Treaty One-based\u00a0Metis\u00a0beading artists\u00a0are\u00a0showcasing\u00a0their\u00a0works alongside each other at Gallery 1C03 at the University of Winnipeg over the next several weeks in an exhibition called Beading Metis Resurgence. The\u00a0exhibition, which features Jennine\u00a0Krauchi, David Heinrichs, Vi Houssin, Claire\u00a0Johnston\u00a0and Brianna\u00a0Oversby,\u00a0shares a wide range of works ranging from pieces in frames to wearable works.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThey represent continuity and the exquisiteness that can be found in Metis beadwork,\u201d says Cathy Mattes, associate professor in art history at the University of Winnipeg and one of the curators of Beading Metis Resurgence, adding that\u00a0the artists were selected to reflect a multigenerational collective of\u00a0beadworkers\u00a0maintaining the artform\u2019s vibrancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe bead love and bead for the ancestors and dream the future all at the same time\u00a0while also asserting presence on the land and providing commentary and speaking or beading through and to what\u2019s happening around the world at the moment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

For co-curator and gallery director Jennifer Gibson, gathering the artists together for conversations about their art was one of the highlights of putting Beading Metis Resurgence together\u00a0over the course of a year and a half. \u201cWe were invited into Jennine\u2019s home where they were all meeting together, got to introduce ourselves and they all introduced themselves to us and we got to learn a little bit more about their practices and what really drives their work,\u201d she says, adding that get-togethers like this would sometimes lead to sharing meals together around the kitchen table. \u201cIt really was beautiful how generous they were with us to be able to spend time with us and we could get to know each other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
The kitchen\u00a0table has\u00a0also\u00a0made its way into Gallery 1C03 for the exhibition\u00a0with the hopes that gallery visitors will feel invited to sit, visit, and learn more about beading from the reading resources that will sit on the table.\u00a0Gibson says that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0part of hers and Mattes\u2019s plans to activate the space and the pieces so that the gallery becomes a space that people can engage with even more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cA really special part of this exhibition is [that] we\u2019re really grateful to be able to have some support in bringing the artists in residence, so to speak,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0activating the space through\u00a0the kitchen table presence, but also,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a number of\u00a0other events that will be happening over the course of the exhibition.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Beading Metis Resurgence runs at Gallery 1C03 until April 17, with beading workshops and conversations with the artists being hosted on March 2, 15 and 23.
