Netflix will make its first foray into MMA with the return of Ronda Rousey against Gina Carano on May 16 at Intuit Dome in L.A., keeping in line with the streamer\u2019s strategy of headline-making live events. The event is Most Valuable Promotions\u2019 debut in MMA and continues its partnership with Netflix that included the last two Jake Paul bouts.<\/p>\n
Tickets go on sale March 5. The bout, scheduled for five, five-minute rounds will be contested under Unified Rules of MMA at 145 pounds in a hexagon cage. Rousey termed the bout \u201cthe biggest super fight in women\u2019s combat sports history.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked Friday on CNBC\u2019s \u201cPower Lunch\u201d about Netflix\u2019s sports strategy, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria broadened the discussion to live events. \u201cFor us, the strategy is probably different than other media companies,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just in sports, it\u2019s what are the live events for us, what are those big, buzzy, unmissable moments.\u201d She cited the Paul-Tyson bout that was seen by 125 million people, NFL games on Christmas Day \u201cwith the Beyonce Bowl, Snoop Dogg really creating a Christmas Day event,\u201d and Alex Honnold\u2019s climb on Skyscraper Live that was in the Netflix global top 10 for two weeks. \u201cSports? Yes, but just big, big, big events,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Bajaria was more non-committal about Netflix\u2019s interest in NFL rights with the league expected opt out of its current deals, except with Disney, after the 2028-29 season. \u201cWe love the NFL,\u201d she told CNBC. \u201cWe know people love football. We love having the games on Christmas Day.
