{"id":481311,"date":"2026-02-17T19:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T19:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/481311\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T19:22:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T19:22:14","slug":"carney-unveils-buy-canadian-defence-plan-says-security-cant-be-a-hostage-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/481311\/","title":{"rendered":"Carney unveils \u2018Buy Canadian\u2019 defence plan, says security can\u2019t be a \u2018hostage\u2019 &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/mark-carney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Carney<\/a> released his new Buy Canadian plan for supplying the military and growing Canada\u2019s domestic defence industry on Tuesday, saying Canada can never be \u201chostage\u201d to the decisions of others when it comes to security.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The $6.6-billion plan promises to prioritize building military equipment at home, hike the share of defence contracts awarded to Canadian firms and add up to 125,000 new jobs over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>The goal, Carney said, is to go from using domestic defence procurement for roughly one-third of Canada\u2019s needs to around 70 per cent, and increase Canada\u2019s defence exports by 50 per cent over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefending Canada means more than just increasing the size of our military. It means being strong enough to be a partner of choice rather than a dependent.
