Construction has begun on the Bishoftu International Airport, a major new aviation hub south of Addis Ababa<\/a>, Ethiopia. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architect<\/a>s, the airport will be built in multiple phases with an initial opening targeted for 2030.<\/p>\n

Phase one will include a 6.6 million square foot terminal and two parallel runways, enabling the airport<\/a> to handle up to 60 million passengers annually. Later phases aim to increase capacity to 110 million passengers per year, with four runways and parking for 270 aircraft.<\/p>\n

The terminal\u2019s layout is organized along a central spine inspired by the nearby Great Rift Valley. The design of the scheme prioritizes transfer passengers, who are expected to make up the majority of users, and will include an airside hotel, gardens, retail, and leisure facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sustainability<\/a> measures include natural ventilation, solar shading, photovoltaic energy generation, and stormwater reuse systems, with the project targeting LEED Gold certification. A planned high-speed rail link will connect the airport to central Addis Ababa and Bole International Airport.<\/p>\n
