{"id":481934,"date":"2026-02-18T01:32:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/481934\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T01:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T01:32:13","slug":"city-council-looking-for-solutions-following-pedestrian-fatalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/481934\/","title":{"rendered":"City council looking for solutions following pedestrian fatalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After two pedestrian deaths on the Family Day long weekend, Calgary city councillors are seeking measures to combat the rising number of fatal collisions on city streets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And council members said Tuesday they are also awaiting word from the provincial government on the city\u2019s previous request to restore photo radar enforcement \u2014 and to use proceeds from subsequent fine revenue to support traffic calming and safety measures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The two deaths, less than 24 hours apart, involved a <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/toddler-killed-being-struck-vehicle-041627484.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:two-year-old child;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two-year-old child<\/a> and a senior male. They were Calgary\u2019s seventh and eighth fatal traffic collisions in 2026, as well as the second and third pedestrian fatalities of the year. Both were struck in marked crosswalks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Coun. Andrew Yule, whose Ward 3 encompasses the 200 block of Panatella Hill N.W., where the man in his seventies was <a href=\"https:\/\/ca.news.yahoo.com\/senior-dies-citys-second-fatal-210618787.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:hit by a semi truck trailer in a grocery store parking lot;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hit by a semi truck trailer in a grocery store parking lot<\/a> on Monday, asked Mayor Jeromy Farkas if he has received a response to a letter he sent to Alberta Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen, asking to restore photo radar enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Farkas said he met in person with Dreeshen shortly after the 2026 budget talks, and raised the issue of traffic safety and the reduction of fine revenue resulting from automated traffic enforcement restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He also said he sent a formal letter to Dreeshen\u2019s office on Feb. 12, and was still awaiting a reply as of Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\" Flowers are seen at a crosswalk on Horton Road S.W. in Calgary on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, where a collision claimed the life of a two-year-old in a stroller last Sunday.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/8ebc1574356ff518c665b8ab32330633.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Flowers are seen at a crosswalk on Horton Road S.W. in Calgary on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, where a collision claimed the life of a two-year-old in a stroller last Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Critical public safety crisis\u2019: Calgary\u2019s streets seeing more fatalities<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Farkas\u2019 letter to Dreeshen, which the mayor read aloud during the question period of council\u2019s public hearing meeting on Tuesday, argues the Alberta government\u2019s removal of photo radar on provincially controlled highways in April 2025 has \u201cled to an upswing in speed-related collisions,\u201d as well as a $28-million revenue shortfall for the Calgary Police Service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Between 2024 and 2025, the Calgary Police Service reported more than 900 pedestrian crashes and an unprecedented 27 fatalities, \u201cunderscoring a critical public safety crisis,\u201d Farkas\u2019s letter states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fifteen of those fatal pedestrian collisions occurred last year \u2014 an 11-year high. If including motorists, 38 people were killed in vehicular collisions in 2025, according to the city, making it the deadliest year on Calgary\u2019s streets in nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s just a reminder that we\u2019ve got a lot of work to do as council to make sure that pedestrian safety is top of mind,\u201d Yule said, of the two latest fatalities. \u201cOne of the things that we did during our budget deliberations is add more (funding) to safety, traffic safety, and we want to make sure that we\u2019re continuing with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-ylk=\"ct:story;elm:img;itc:0;\" class=\"stretched-box\" href=\"https:\/\/smartcdn.gprod.postmedia.digital\/calgaryherald\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0218-road-fatalities-1.png\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><img alt=\"Road fatalities in Calgary\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"1153\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/3cd609d2efb012f9cf65fdcaa39fbd9a.jpeg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Road fatalities in Calgary<\/p>\n<p>Council allocating funds to improve safety, calls for province\u2019s help<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During budget deliberations in early December, council unanimously approved an amendment to add $2 million in capital funding for 2026, to add two additional rectangular rapid flashing beacons in each ward.
