{"id":482218,"date":"2026-02-18T04:27:18","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T04:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/482218\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T04:27:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T04:27:18","slug":"mississauga-approves-additional-incentives-to-encourage-purpose-built-rental-housing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/482218\/","title":{"rendered":"Mississauga approves additional incentives to encourage purpose-built rental housing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MISSISSAUGA, ONT. \u2013 Mississauga City Council has approved a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pub-mississauga.escribemeetings.com\/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=81826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">motion<\/a> to expand the city\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/services-and-programs\/planning-and-development\/growth-charges\/development-charges\/development-charges-by-laws-and-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">development charges<\/a>\u00a0incentive program with the aim of getting more purpose-built rental apartment projects off the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The motion eliminates development charges, effective immediately, for one-bedroom plus den and two-bedroom units. To be eligible, developers must pull a building permit before Nov. 13, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>According to a release, in January 2025, after the release of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/housing-taskforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Mayor\u2019s Housing Task Force<\/a>\u00a0report, Mississauga became one of the first municipalities in Ontario to reduce and\/or eliminate development charges for residential housing. The Region of Peel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/peelregion.ca\/press-releases\/regional-council-approves-historic-motion-modernize-infrastructure-funding-accelerate-housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">passed a motion<\/a>\u00a0to match the city\u2019s incentives in June 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Other housing actions Mississauga is highlighting include:<\/p>\n<p>Funding for affordable housing: This $44 million affordable rental housing incentive program, made possible through federal funding, offers financial incentives to help stimulate the creation of new affordable rental housing.<br \/>\nCouncil approved an update to the city\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/services-and-programs\/building-and-renovating\/zoning-information\/zoning-by-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Zoning By-law<\/a>to allow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/projects-and-strategies\/city-projects\/increasing-housing-choices-in-neighbourhoods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">semi-detached homes and homes on smaller lots<\/a>\u00a0in residential neighbourhoods. The city\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/joc\/news\/projects\/2026\/02\/arviat-nunavut-chosen-as-main-campus-location-for-inuit-nunangat-university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">gentle density incentive program<\/a>\u00a0provides grants to cover fees and development charges (if applicable) for fourplexes and additional residential units. The city also offers pre-approved\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/garden-suites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">garden suite design plans<\/a>\u00a0and materials lists that residents can use for free.<br \/>\nMississauga is moving forward with pre-zoning lands in the city\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mississauga.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/dashboards\/4580dedfa04f4c92af73faa492326d6f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Protected Major Transit Station Areas<\/a>.
