“I personally have a really hard time identifying what is beautiful and what is not,\u201d admits Skye Callow.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Winnipeg\u00a0artist is working to create her own sense of beauty alongside fellow photographer Tobin Rowland in a joint exhibition entitled\u00a0Constructed Image at\u00a0aceartinc.\u00a0on\u00a0Princess Street in the Exchange District. The\u00a0pair work with their photos in a variety of ways to find new beauty from digital manipulations to photocopier treatments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I recognize beauty when I really feel something,\u201d muses Callow as she describes her processes, \u201clike a strong emotional response to something that\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0working on or something that I see.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0like when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0walking around and you see a construction and\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0like, \u2018Wow, the light is hitting this so nicely!\u2019 And it might not be a field of flowers, but\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0something about it that\u00a0is\u00a0really powerful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rowland feels similarly about the combination of a moment\u2019s inspiration and the artist\u2019s act of manipulation. \u201cIt gives this whole new meaning to what the image is because your hands have touched it,\u201d they say.\u00a0\u201cI think there\u00a0is\u00a0thoughtlessness\u00a0about it that is so important, that you just\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0actually analyze\u00a0the quality of the image.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0more just a feeling then, and then you work into it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

New meaning is given to both Rowland\u2019s and Callow\u2019s works by the nature of being displayed alongside each other at\u00a0aceartinc.\u00a0Each of them has noticed an impression that the other is leaving on them. \u201cA lot of this idea of unfinishedness comes in a lot,\u201d says Rowland, adding that they and Callow have been discussing this idea since the exhibition first opened back in January.\u00a0\u201cYou can still understand that you paused a moment in the process and you were like, \u2018This is the one I will present, but that doesn\u2019t mean that I can\u2019t go further.\u2019 I think\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0really nice\u00a0and I think\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0something that our work shares\u00a0is\u00a0that it is this… feeling of unfinishedness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Callow rephrases the idea of unfinishedness with her work as re-exhibition. \u201cOnce you exhibit, it doesn\u2019t mean that that work of art is complete,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt is stagnant for that moment of exhibition, but it\u00a0is\u00a0able to\u00a0be pushed further if you do so choose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
