{"id":483558,"date":"2026-02-18T18:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T18:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/483558\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T18:36:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T18:36:15","slug":"unique-1960s-home-of-prolific-developer-harold-shipp-gets-heritage-nod-in-mississauga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/483558\/","title":{"rendered":"Unique 1960s home of prolific developer Harold Shipp gets heritage nod in Mississauga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A prolific builder in Mississauga, Harold Shipp was known for his trademark \u201cShipp-built\u201d brick embedded in his homes\u2014and now his former home received recognition with a heritage nod.<\/p>\n<p>Shipp was a renowned Mississauga builder, developer and philanthropist in Mississauga. He died in 2014, but not before leaving his mark on the city.<\/p>\n<p>He was a \u201csignificant cultural figure in the story of Mississauga,\u201d Matthew Wilkinson, Mississauga Heritage Advisory Committee committee member and historian with Heritage Mississauga, said at the Feb. 10 heritage committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>With his father, GTA developer Gordon Shipp, Harold Shipp built nearly 900 homes in Applewood Acres, Applewood Heights and Applewood Hills in the 1950s. At the time, it was the largest single subdivision built by a family developer in Canada, according to a story on Visit Mississauga. The Shipps went on to build more homes in the Credit Woodlands and Streetsville.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-794235\" class=\"wp-image-794235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/500-comanche-road-mississauga-applewood-acres.jpg\" alt=\"applewood acres homes mississauga\" width=\"1430\" height=\"994\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-794235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Applewood Acres sales pavilion. He received numerous accolades, including both the Queen\u2019s Silver Jubilee and Canada 125 medals. Shipp gave back to the community extensively, most notably the Harold G. and June C. Shipp Stroke Centre at Trillium Hospital\u2019s Mississauga campus.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Shipp\u2019s family home at 500 Comanche Rd., south of the QEW, off Mississauga Road,\u00a0was recently approved for a heritage designation under the Ontario Heritage Act for its physical, design, historical, associative and contextual value at the Feb. 10 Heritage Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidyard-player-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771439772_908_awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu.jpg\" data-videoid=\"790139\" data-uuid=\"awZCW3rPmWvxPqZHnBCKLu\" data-v=\"4\" data-type=\"inline\" data-muted=\"1\" style=\"width:100%\"\/>    <\/p>\n<p>        <img width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Screenshot-2026-01-30-at-1.55.02-PM-1024x513.png\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\"  decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>      <\/p>\n<p>The Comanche Road house epitomizes \u201cwell-to-do 60s suburban architecture and is contextually related to the Credit River and nearby transportation routes that helped give rise to sprawling homes in the area now known as Mississauga,\u201d the committee report notes.<\/p>\n<p>Shipp had one of his engineers design the ranch-style bungalow in 1966, and it was built the same year. The Shipp family lived there from 1967 to 2009.<\/p>\n<p>His trademark \u201cShipp-built\u201d brick graces this home.\u00a0In a sales video for the property, while pointing to the brick, Shipp says: \u201cThat\u2019s what makes me proud of this home.
