{"id":483640,"date":"2026-02-18T19:28:09","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/483640\/"},"modified":"2026-02-18T19:28:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T19:28:09","slug":"nasa-gives-terrifying-update-on-thousands-of-city-killer-asteroids-that-could-hit-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/483640\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA gives terrifying update on thousands of \u2018city-killer\u2019 asteroids that could hit Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">NASA has just issued quite the alarming update on thousands of so-called &#8216;city-killer&#8217; asteroids that could hit Earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">The space rocks, each around 140 metres wide, are moving through near-Earth <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a> and could &#8216;really cause regional damage&#8217; if one struck a populated area, according to the agency\u2019s planetary defence chief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Dr Kelly Fast, the head of planetary defence at the <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/us-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">US<\/a> agency overseeing efforts to track <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/news\/nasa-asteroid-2024-yr4-update-odds-hitting-earth-731307-20250221\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearby asteroids<\/a> and comets, said roughly 15,000 mid-sized objects remain unaccounted for, and scientists also warn Earth, which is <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/news\/earth-halfway-lifespan-sun-dead-planet-400983-20260217\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">now about halfway through its lifespan<\/a>, currently lacks the means to stop one if it were heading our way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">Speaking at the <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/us-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American<\/a> Association for the Advancement of <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/science\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a> (AAAS) conference in Arizona last week, Dr Fast said medium-sized asteroids pose the biggest worry, via <a class=\"anchor_link__6t7IO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/tech\/15950949\/earth-defenceless-thousands-city-killer-asteroids-nasa-warning\/\">The Sun<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;What keeps me up at night is the asteroids we don&#8217;t know about,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Small stuff is hitting us all the time, so we&#8217;re not so much worried about that. We don\u2019t know where 50 per cent of the 140-metre asteroids are, which is a concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text_text__nEn66\">&#8220;We would not have any way to go and actively deflect one right now.
