The 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off in less than five months in Vancouver, and the city is preparing for a rush of tourists and sports fans. Seven matches are scheduled at BC Place, with thousands expected to attend.<\/p>\n
According to FIFA\u2019s official Vancouver Host City website, the City of Vancouver is working with TransLink to support the anticipated increased travel demand. FIFA stated that public transit will be the best way to reach the stadium and that additional service will be added to accommodate spectators.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Vancouver Host Committee said, \u201cThe existing city transportation network is expected to function well to allow reliable travel during the FIFA World Cup 2026. Vancouver has a centrally located stadium tied closely to the region with a robust network of rapid transit and active transportation facilities in a walkable downtown core.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement also noted that TransLink is deploying its newest generation of SkyTrain vehicles and bus service. It is being supported by expanded dedicated bus lanes, including connections between BC Place and the FIFA Fan Festival. <\/p>\n
Vancouver\u2019s public transit system has handled large crowds during major events in the past. TransLink reported more than 1.9 million customer journeys during Taylor Swift\u2019s Eras Tour in December 2023. Other events, including the Vancouver International Film Festival and large concerts, have led to near-capacity service levels on SkyTrain, bus and SeaBus routes.<\/p>\n
Despite that track record, some residents remain concerned about accessing transit during the World Cup. Tiffany Morton, a frequent transit rider, said she expects crowding but believes officials will draw on experience from previous large events.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey had more people stationed at the lines,\u201d Morton said. \u201cThe part that slowed everything down was people getting confused on the walkways to get into the trains. And of course, adding more cars.\u201d<\/p>\n
