Assisted Living Navigation Portal<\/a> on Wednesday, describing it as a \u201cone\u2011stop shop\u201d for Albertans seeking help with finding care homes or managing health\u2011related needs.<\/p>\nThe portal allows users to select categories such as searching for a care home, getting help with health needs, or both. The tool is a key component of the province\u2019s Assisted Living Framework, first announced in December 2025.<\/p>\n
Smith said the broader goal is to move Alberta toward a long\u2011term care model inspired by European systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Swedes encourage competition by putting a priority on user choice and person\u2011centered care,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re looking to them for inspiration.\u201d<\/p>\n
The premier also claimed that the number of non\u2011acute patients occupying hospital beds, often those waiting for long\u2011term care placements, has declined in recent months.<\/p>\n
But not everyone is convinced.<\/p>\n
Rebecca Graff\u2011McRae, a public policy researcher with the Parkland Institute, questioned both the government\u2019s data and the effectiveness of the new portal.<\/p>\n
\u201cShow me the numbers and show me the methodology of how you came by those numbers,\u201d she said. \u201cAn online portal akin to Airbnb somehow improving overall accessibility, I think is really stretching.\u201d<\/p>\n
Graff\u2011McRae added that ongoing health\u2011care restructuring has already made it more difficult for patients to navigate the system.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom what we are hearing so far, that seems really, really challenging,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The province maintains the new tool will streamline access and reduce pressure on hospitals.
