U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> is commending Sydney Sweeney<\/a> for her recent American Eagle<\/a> campaign, following a wave of social media backlash over its messaging.<\/p>\n

The denim brand\u2019s latest advertisement, fronted by the Euphoria actor, whose tagline plays on the words \u201cjeans\u201d and \u201cgenes,\u201d has been targeted by critics who suggest the brand is celebrating traits typically associated with whiteness.<\/p>\n

\u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue,\u201d Sweeney says in the ad, which appears to have been scrubbed from the internet. Other versions still remain, such as this one, below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

On Monday, Trump told a reporter while disembarking a plane in Pennsylvania, \u201cOh, she\u2019s a registered Republican, oh, now I love her ad. If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His comments followed a claim that\u00a0The White Lotus star registered with the Republican Party<\/a> ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election. (Several news outlets confirmed and corroborated with publicly available records that Sweeney is a registered Republican. Global News viewed Florida voter registration for a Sydney Sweeney, listed as a Republican, with the same birthday as the actor.)<\/p>\n

The president continued to share his thoughts on the ad campaign on Truth Social<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the \u201cHOTTEST\u201d ad out there. It\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u201cflying off the shelves.\u201d Go get \u2018em Sydney,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

American Eagle has defended the campaign, saying it is simply referring to the colour of Sweeney\u2019s jeans.<\/p>\n

The campaign \u201cis and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We\u2019ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone,\u201d the retailer wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

The message marked the first response from the brand following days of backlash since the campaign\u2019s launch last week.<\/p>\n

In the run-up to its release, the company\u2019s chief marketing officer told trade media outlets that it included \u201cclever, even provocative language\u201d and was \u201cdefinitely going to push buttons,\u201d The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

Some critics have argued that the \u201cgenes\u201d \u201cjeans\u201d wordplay is a nod, whether intentional or not, to eugenics, a discredited theory that held humanity could be improved through selective breeding for certain traits, including blue eyes and blonde hair.<\/p>\n

Others have accused those knocking the campaign of reading too deeply into the messaging and imagery.<\/p>\n

Some marketing experts said the buzz is always good, even if it\u2019s not uniformly positive.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you try to follow all the rules, you\u2019ll make lots of people happy, but you\u2019ll fail,\u201d Allen Adamson, co-founder of marketing consultancy Metaforce, said. \u201cThe rocket won\u2019t take off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweeney has not commented on the backlash or confirmed her political affiliations.<\/p>\n
