{"id":485540,"date":"2026-02-19T15:13:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T15:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485540\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T15:13:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T15:13:07","slug":"petaluma-piner-santa-rosa-boys-among-1st-round-winners-several-top-seeds-upsets-the-press-democrat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485540\/","title":{"rendered":"Petaluma, Piner, Santa Rosa boys among 1st-round winners; several top seeds upsets \u2013 The Press Democrat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boys<\/p>\n<p>Division 1<\/p>\n<p>No. 6 Analy 3, No. 11 Livermore 0<\/p>\n<p>Sam Weatherly scored twice to help lead the Tigers to a win over the visiting Cowboys on Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>Weatherly put Analy (21-0-2) ahead 1-0 at halftime and then made it 2-0 out of the break before Mateo Cortez put the game away with a goal in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigers will host No. 14 seed Alameda (14-6-3) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 14 Alameda 2, No. 3 Ukiah 1<\/p>\n<p>The NBL-Oak champion Wildcats were upset at home in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets (14-6-2) scored their goals on a pair of set pieces \u2013 which were their only shots of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Ukiah\u2019s season is over at 15-6.<\/p>\n<p>No. 8 Archie Williams 2, No. 9 Windsor 0<\/p>\n<p>The Peregrine Falcons scored two goals in quick succession to end the Jaguars\u2019 season in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The game was scoreless at halftime before Archie Williams scored two goals within five minutes of each other with under 30 minutes to play.<\/p>\n<p>Windsor ends the season at 11-4-6 overall.<\/p>\n<p>No. 5 Las Lomas 1, No. 12 Montgomery 1 (Las Lomas 6-5 PKs)<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings lost a heartbreaker in penalty kicks on the road Wednesday night to see their season end in the first round of the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>With the game tied 1-1 after regulation, Montgomery (11-7-2) scored what would have been the game winner in the first overtime period, but it was wiped away as the officials called a handball on the Vikings.<\/p>\n<p>The Knights (15-5) would go on to win the penalty kick shootout 6-5 to advance to the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>Division 4<\/p>\n<p>No. 1 Petaluma 3, No. 16 Justin-Siena 2 (OT)<\/p>\n<p>A back-and-forth battle between two Vine Valley Athletic League opponents ended in dramatic fashion as the Trojans escaped an upset by the Braves with a strange game-winning goal in overtime.<\/p>\n<p>With the score tied 2-2 in the first extra period, a shot by Jordan Tetreau was stopped and smothered by Justin-Siena\u2019s goalkeeper. However, as the keeper rose from his feet, the ball slipped from his grasp and bounced past the line, giving Petaluma the sudden-death victory.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first playoff win for the Trojans (8-6-6) since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Tetreau and Tyler Lamansky scored the first two goals of the game for Petaluma. The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Trojans scored early in the second half, only for the Braves (7-13-4) to answer with a goal with 20 minutes to play.<\/p>\n<p>Petaluma will host No. 8 seed Marin Academy (6-9-7) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 3 Piner 7, No. 14 Concord 1<\/p>\n<p>The Prospectors netted a season high in goals in their playoff opener Wednesday against the visiting Bears.<\/p>\n<p>Micah Santoyo had a hat trick while Alexis Leon, Mauricio Durante, Victory Suarez and Javier Lemus all added a goal apiece for Piner (8-5-5). It\u2019s the first playoff win since 2020 for the Prospectors, who will host NBL-Redwood foe Santa Rosa (5-5-5), the No. 6 seed, in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 4 Roseland University Prep 3, No. 13 Cardinal Newman 1<\/p>\n<p>The Knights took down the Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs on Wednesday as they began their section title defense.<\/p>\n<p>Jonas Pena scored the first two goals to help RUP (8-3-8) out to a 2-0 lead by halftime.<\/p>\n<p>Gavin Stone got a goal back for Newman (3-12-3) in the 58th minute, but Pena sealed the win with his third goal of the night in the 78th minute.<\/p>\n<p>Adan Campos, Cris Cortes and Ian Pacheco had assists for Pena\u2019s hat trick. It\u2019s the first time that RUP has beaten Cardinal Newman since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Knights will host No. 5 seed Tennyson (10-4-9) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 6 Santa Rosa 3, No. 11 Vallejo 0<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers got two goals from Liam Hadley in the first half Wednesday to pick up their first playoff win on the road since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Hadley scored both his goals within a five-minute span midway through the opening frame to put Santa Rosa (5-5-5) in control early. Jorge Jimenez then put the game out of reach with a goal in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>The Panthers will face a familiar foe in the second round. They\u2019ll play at No. 3 seed Piner (8-5-5) at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Other scores<\/p>\n<p>Division 4: No. 12 Healdsburg 0, No. 5 Tennyson 0 (Tennyson 5-3 PKs)<\/p>\n<p>Girls<\/p>\n<p>Division 1<\/p>\n<p>No. 2 Ukiah 2, No. 15 Redwood 0<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats scored twice in the second half to avoid an upset by the visiting Giants in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Scoreless at halftime, Addison Huff got Ukiah (12-5) on the board with a PK and Kaci Maynard added a goal later in the second half off an assist from Allie Huff.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats will host\u00a0 No. 10 seed Northgate (10-2-5) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 13 Miramonte 2, No. 4 Casa Grande 1<\/p>\n<p>The Gaucho couldn\u2019t overcome a two-goal deficit as their season ended in a first-round upset by the visiting Matadors on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Miramonte (10-4-2) led 1-0 at halftime and made it 2-0 in the early minutes of the second half. Casa Grande, which ends the year at 14-3-3, scored early in the second half but couldn\u2019t net an equalizer.<\/p>\n<p>No. 12 Liberty 1, No. 5 Windsor 0<\/p>\n<p>The Jaguars were also upset on the road in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday, unable to answer an early goal from the Lions.<\/p>\n<p>Liberty (13-2-3), which hosted the game despite holding a lower seed due to being a league champion, scored the game\u2019s only goal in the first half.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s just the third time that Windsor (13-6) has been held without a goal this season.<\/p>\n<p>No. 1 Las Lomas 2, No. 16 Montgomery 0<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings battled tough on the road with the top-seeded Knights but ultimately fell in their playoff opener Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Las Lomas (16-2-1) scored late in the first half and then put the game away with a goal in the closing minutes of the second half as Montgomery tried to push the issue looking for an equalizer.<\/p>\n<p>The Vikings close out the year at 10-9-3 overall.<\/p>\n<p>Division 4<\/p>\n<p>No. 3 Rancho Cotate 3, No. 14 College Prep 1<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars scored three times in the first half to roll past College Prep in their playoff opener Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first playoff win for Rancho Cotate (8-5-2) since 2011. Olivia Goff, MiaJane Smith and Aliyah Guizar all found the back of the net and Michelle Lopez dished out a pair of assists.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars will host No. 6 seed Pinole Valley (10-8-2) in the second round at 7 p.m. Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 8 Piner 3, No. 9 Kennedy-Fremont 3 (Kennedy 4-3 PKs)<\/p>\n<p>The Prospectors saw their season end in a wild back-and-forth playoff opener Wednesday that was ultimately decided in a penalty kick shootout.<\/p>\n<p>Piner, which finishes the season at 8-7-2, leapt out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before the Titans (13-6-1) convert a PK just before the break to make it 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>The Titans then tied the game on another PK early in the second half, but the Prospectors went back ahead on a PK of their own not long after.<\/p>\n<p>The Titans then scored one final goal in the closing minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime tied 3-3.
