Here\u2019s why no one can agree"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnvy5n000x27ql1ec83jed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AI is either your most helpful coworker, a glorified search engine or vastly overrated depending on who you ask.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4n00043b6p7vri8re3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And no one seems to agree on which is right.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o00053b6p3g5hs8cg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tech executives championing AI have long spun the narrative that the tech will revolutionize jobs and bring about a new industrial revolution. Skeptics think it\u2019s all marketing hype, while some researchers and executives <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/11\/business\/openai-anthropic-departures-nightcap\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">are sounding the alarm<\/a> about safety concerns on their way out the door.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o00063b6pp2xnxqki@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The discrepancy in how people view AI has perhaps never been so apparent as this past week, after <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/mattshumer_\/status\/2021256989876109403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a viral essay<\/a> from an AI CEO and investor claimed the tech is coming for any job that involves sitting in front of a computer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o00073b6pyzznozsi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there may be a simpler explanation as to why people have taken such divergent stands: People use different types of AI in different ways, yet it\u2019s all being referred to in the same way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o00083b6pdv6aode0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s just a wide spectrum of how much people have been exposed to the technology, how much they\u2019ve used the technology,\u201d said Matt Murphy, a partner at Menlo Ventures who has led investments in AI companies including Anthropic. \u201cAnd that\u2019s also changing pretty rapidly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000a3b6peg28hn4k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            People who use free AI for basic tasks like making grocery lists and planning vacations are likely only seeing one side of the technology. A <a href=\"https:\/\/menlovc.com\/perspective\/2025-the-state-of-consumer-ai\/#3d785b95-a001-440c-bd90-0d870915ddb9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report from Menlo Ventures<\/a> published last June estimated that only 3% of AI users are paid subscribers, although Murphy told CNN he expects that to change quickly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000b3b6pivc3oy6g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But those who pay get access to another feature: Agents that can handle some work for you rather than just chatbots that craft responses, plus fewer limits on usage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000c3b6pn1zz3ytv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anthropic\u2019s Claude Cowork agent, for example, is only available in the $20-per-month Pro plan and higher. The case is similar for OpenAI\u2019s Codex coding agent.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000d3b6p0dhmoqco@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s that type of AI that\u2019s fueling concerns about AI\u2019s impact on jobs, including the controversial argument Matt Shumer, an investor and CEO of AI writing assistant startup Otherside AI, gets at in his viral essay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000e3b6p2xafxmal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ll tell the AI: \u2018I want to build this app. Here\u2019s what it should do, here\u2019s roughly what it should look like. Figure out the user flow, the design, all of it.\u2019 And it does. It writes tens of thousands of lines of code,\u201d Shumer wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000f3b6p44th1gia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He went on to claim that the AI was able to test the app and make decisions concerning taste and judgment. And he surmised that if AI could write code that well, it could begin improving upon itself, as well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000g3b6piawi27fh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            (AI researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/venturebeat.com\/ai\/reflection-70b-model-maker-breaks-silence-amid-fraud-accusations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accused Shumer of exaggerating<\/a> the performance of his company\u2019s AI model in 2024. He apologized at the time and told CNN it was the \u201cbiggest mistake\u201d of his \u201cprofessional life\u201d and that he learned through the process).\n    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000h3b6pggg06vey@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some experts are skeptical the use cases Shumer outlined are possible even with paid plans, especially since he was vague about which model he used and what type of app the AI built for him. Shumer told CNN he primarily uses OpenAI\u2019s GPT-5.3 Codex tool and that he was working on a \u201cmedium to high complexity app\u201d for testing purposes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000i3b6pibmjyrwi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the free version of AI apps doesn\u2019t paint the full picture of what the technology is capable of, according to Emily DeJeu, a professor who teaches courses about the use of AI in business at Carnegie Mellon University. She said it would be \u201cmisguided\u201d to make assumptions about AI\u2019s capabilities based solely on free AI services.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000j3b6pgqqzxbom@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Oren Etzioni, professor emeritus at the University of Washington and previous CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, described the gap between the free and paid tiers of AI like comparing an eager yet inexperienced intern with a seasoned, hard-working intern. Free AI tiers are good at writing summaries and generating content, but users will typically have to pay to conduct deep research or draft sophisticated documents using AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000k3b6pz0zab53u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While free AI can \u201cgive you surprisingly good advice\u201d and \u201cengage with you in a surprisingly sophisticated dialog, you wouldn\u2019t want to use one of those as your attorney or even as your paralegal,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000l3b6p1kxavujl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But AI companies are increasingly trickling more advanced features down to the free tier, which is part of why James Landay, cofounder of the Stanford Institute for Human Centered AI, said he doesn\u2019t see a big difference between free and paywalled AI. Case in point: Anthropic launched a new model called Sonnet 4.6 on Tuesday that it says will bring performance closer to its more advanced Opus models only available in its paid plans.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Simmering tensions over AI and work<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/gettyimages-2242189159.jpg\" alt=\"Artificial intelligence applications from various providers are increasingly shaping everyday digital life - from text and image generators to research and assistance functions.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000n3b6pja95b643@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Software stocks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/04\/investing\/us-stocks-anthropic-software\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plummeted in early February<\/a> after AI company Anthropic released a tool tailoring its AI helper specifically for individual industries, like legal and financial analysis. That launch, followed by Shumer\u2019s essay, stoked concerns that AI will eventually broadly automate knowledge work the way it\u2019s starting to streamline software engineering jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000o3b6pudn5l0te@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet there\u2019s also growing skepticism about whether AI is living up to these lofty declarations, often made by tech executives with financial interests in the technology\u2019s success. Some studies have poured cold water over how capable AI truly is and how quickly it\u2019s being adopted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000p3b6p6qyfqpbz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2510.26787v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">group of researchers<\/a> from the Center for AI Safety and Scale AI found last year that leading AI models produced flawed results when tasked with work assignments like visualizing data and coding video games. An organization that tests AI models called <a href=\"https:\/\/metr.org\/blog\/2025-07-10-early-2025-ai-experienced-os-dev-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Model Evaluation and Threat Research<\/a> found in July that developers take 19% longer to work on their code when using AI, although that research was based on tools from early 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmlsnwp4o000q3b6p81auffyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Landay also says the role AI is playing in software development is overstated in the essay. AI is a helpful tool that programmers use to speed up development, but it\u2019s still prone to mistakes, and AI models aren\u2019t writing themselves.
