{"id":485771,"date":"2026-02-19T17:35:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:35:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485771\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T17:35:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:35:11","slug":"thrift-shop-buried-under-rags-gets-helping-hand-from-designer-who-wants-to-reduce-landfill-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485771\/","title":{"rendered":"Thrift Shop Buried Under &#8216;Rags&#8217; Gets Helping Hand from Designer Who Wants to Reduce Landfill Waste"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-229842 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Victoria-Ford-credit-Derien-House-Childrens-Hospice-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"  \/>Victoria Ford \u2013 credit Derian House Childrens Hospice<\/p>\n<p>An English thrift shop that found itself buried under mountains of old donated clothes has gotten a helping hand from a talented designer.<\/p>\n<p>Recent fashion and design graduate Victoria Ford approached the shop and offered to transform some of its unwanted rags into bespoke pieces for sale at premium prices.<\/p>\n<p>The thrift shop proceeds benefit Derian House Children\u2019s Hospice in Chorley, but rather than generating revenue to pay for the hospital\u2019s expenses, the shop had mostly become a dropping off point for unwanted clothes which piled up in \u201ceyewatering amounts\u201d and sat unsorted in huge sacks in the shop\u2019s warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>Most would have probably ended up in a landfill if it weren\u2019t for Ford\u2019s belief in second-chance fashion and an eye for quality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than letting things go to waste, I wanted to help Derian House to give their unsellable clothing a new life, and to turn them into something others can enjoy,\u201d Ford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cjdjvpp8243o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told the BBC.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mick Croskery from the Derian House shop said Victoria\u2019s collection was attracting a new crowd to the shop.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-229843\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Victorias-collection-credit-Derien-House-Childrens-Hospice-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"391\"  \/>Victoria\u2019s collection \u2013 credit Derien House Childrens Hospice<\/p>\n<p>Running on \u201csuper tight margins\u201d and \u201cinundated with rags\u201d too worn down, or with holes, stains, or burns, to sell on, Croskery said \u201cit is that kind of stuff that Victoria has repurposed for us that we couldn\u2019t sell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They used to pay 70 cents per bag of donated clothes, but the shop was receiving so many \u201crags\u201d that they eventually lowered that all the way to 15 cents.<\/p>\n<p>MORE STORIES LIKE THIS:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ford has had to get creative to make use of the excess, but she\u2019s been doing just that since she was 10, she said, finding items in similar thrift shops and transforming them with her sewing machine as a child.
