{"id":485876,"date":"2026-02-19T18:37:17","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T18:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485876\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T18:37:17","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T18:37:17","slug":"alberta-startup-launches-ai-lawyer-for-personal-injury-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/485876\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta startup launches AI \u2018lawyer\u2019 for personal injury claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Alberta-based legal technology company says it is using artificial intelligence to help personal injury claimants navigate the court system.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Painworth, founded in 2020, recently began offering personalized AI-assisted representation for accident victims seeking injury settlements.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Zouhri, one of three founders, said the company\u2019s mission is to improve access to justice for people who may struggle to afford or reach traditional legal services.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tMike Zouhri (left), one of three founders, said the company\u2019s mission is to improve access to justice for people who may struggle to afford or reach traditional legal services.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tPainworth\/ Mike Zouhri\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a myriad of reasons why people have difficulty getting access to justice,\u201d he told Global News in an interview, pointing to rural and remote communities, mobility issues, literacy barriers and what he called \u201cbad case economics,\u201d where a claim may be worth money but not enough to attract a lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The company previously provided AI-powered back-end tools to law firms, including software that can process thousands of pages of medical records and generate chronologies and draft documents.<\/p>\n<p>Its newer offering adds what the company calls DAVID, an AI system that interacts directly with clients seeking representation. DAVID is available 24-7 and can chat in almost every language.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Alberta, the Law Society has given us permission to operate as a law firm, which means that we can now represent people in Alberta, even though we\u2019re non-lawyers,\u201d Zouhri said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br \/>\n\t\t\tMore videos\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>He said every represented file will be overseen by a human lawyer, as required by the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who seeks representation will still have a human ultimately making the final calls,\u201d he said. \u201cThese are human attorneys who could lose their bar license. They are ultimately responsible for the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/1767930311_275_national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet daily National news<\/p>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<p>In an email, the Law Society of Alberta said it was unable to comment on specifics regarding the company, but that it must adhere to a number of conditions to ensure the protection of the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose conditions include the Law Society\u2019s ability to request information about a participant\u2019s operations and the Law Society\u2019s ability to conduct audits to ensure ongoing compliance with conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The personalized AI-assisted representation has been operating since December. Zouhri said no case has yet reached trial or a final resolution, noting that personal injury cases typically take years to move through the courts.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatistically, traditional law firms get resolution on any particular personal injury file in about five years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Under the model, initial intake with the AI system is free. If a client signs a retainer agreement, the company charges a flat 28 per cent contingency fee, which Zouhri said is lower than the 33 per cent or more commonly charged by traditional firms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a flat, which means it never ratchets up or down. It\u2019s just flat, 28 per cent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zouhri said the idea for the company came from his own experience after being hit by a drunk driver in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m patient zero. I\u2019m the alpha tester number one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained how he faced long delays and little communication on his file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA huge and common frustration is\u00a0\u2018why won\u2019t my lawyer get back to me? And I do believe that it could be of serious benefit to people,\u201d Wilson told Global News in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>He said it is crucial that a human remains \u201cin the loop,\u201d especially given documented cases in the United States of lawyers submitting AI-generated filings that contained fabricated legal citations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the U.S. there have been hundreds of hallucinated citations, where lawyers have used it to assist them and then blindly submitted it to the court and it had invented laws and citations,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson also raised concerns about how commercial large language models handle user data.<\/p>\n<p>He said clarity on non-retention agreements or something similar to ensure that clients\u2019 data is protected and not trained upon is important.<\/p>\n<p>Zouhri said Painworth does not train its system on client case material and described each file as isolated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of that stuff is completely black boxed. The [files] don\u2019t mix,\u201d he said, comparing it to locked filing cabinets that cannot share information with one another.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the system uses structured databases and proprietary tools to avoid fabricating case law. \u201cDavid has no ability to hallucinate that whatsoever,\u201d Zouhri said.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Broader fears about AI should be balanced with recognition of its potential benefits, Wilson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a lot of good that can occur out of AI,\u201d Wilson said. But he cautioned that large language models are \u201ckind of like stochastic parrots\u201d that can convincingly generate text without understanding it.<\/p>\n<p>Painworth\u2019s DAVID remains in its early stages.
