According to an expert, beans on toast is packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Writing for the <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/informationsupport\/heart-matters-magazine\/nutrition\/ask-the-expert\/baked-beans-good-for-you\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">British Heart Foundation<\/a> (BHF), dietitian Dell Stanford explained why this cheap and easy meal could help <a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/professor-explains-how-lower-cholesterol-36692599\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\">reduce the risk of heart and circulatory disease<\/a>. While most tinned banked means would be considered \u201cultra-processed\u201d due to added sugars, salt and ingredients like thickeners or preservatives, they can \u201cstill be part of a healthy diet\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Firstly, baked beans, which are usually<a aria-label=\"\" class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/health\/long-life-expert-recommends-one-36666671\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\" target=\"_self\"> haricot or cannellini beans in a tomato sauce<\/a>, are high in fibre. This can help lower cholesterol levels and keep your gut healthy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Ms Stanford said: \u201cBaked beans are low in fat and high in fibre. And the tomato sauce is rich in lycopene, a protective antioxidant linked with a reduced risk of heart and circulatory diseases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cReplacing some of the meat you eat with beans is a great way to eat less unhealthy saturated fat, manage your weight and reduce your risk of heart and circulatory diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wholegrain bread\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/0_GettyImages-2251230124.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p aria-label=\"For a healthier option you should use wholegrain bread for your toast instead of white\" class=\"ImageCaption_caption-title__ccyQU\" data-testid=\"caption-title\">For a healthier option you should use wholegrain bread for your toast instead of white(Image: Getty)<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s a catch<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is important to be aware of the salt and sugar content in baked beans, though. \u201cHowever, look out for the salt and sugar content of baked beans,\u201d Ms Stanford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cA typical half can portion (207g) of baked beans contains about 1.3g salt. That\u2019s 21 per cent of the maximum recommended amount of salt you should have a day (6g). A half can also contain about 9g sugar \u2013 that&#8217;s 10 per cent of the maximum recommended amount of \u2018total\u2019 sugar you should have a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cTraffic light labels on food packaging show only total sugars. They do not tell you how much is naturally occurring (as in fruit or milk) and how much is \u2018free\u2019 or \u2018added\u2019 sugar (as in table sugar or syrup).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cIn baked beans, most of the sugar is added, because beans themselves do not naturally contain much sugar. It&#8217;s mainly from the tomato sauce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It is therefore worth opting for baked beans that have reduced sugar and salt where possible.
