It was a heartbreaker for Team Canada\u2019s women\u2019s hockey team at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n

The Canadians fell 2-1 in overtime to rivals Team USA, narrowly missing out on gold.<\/p>\n

In Montreal, fans packed Le Nadia \u2013 Guinguette sportive, the city\u2019s hub for women\u2019s sports, to celebrate the team\u2019s effort.<\/p>\n

Mixed emotions: pride and disappointment<\/p>\n

Rachel S\u00e9vigny, a South Shore resident, admitted she felt deflated after the overtime loss but was still proud of the team\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had it till the end, I think. It sucks, but at the end of the day, women winning\u2014even though it\u2019s not the team that we wanted to win\u2014it\u2019s a nice feeling to see just women winning. So I\u2019m OK with it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Despite the loss, S\u00e9vigny\u2019s admiration for the team remained clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m disappointed that Canada didn\u2019t win, but I\u2019m still happy to see women winning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a game. They did a great job. They held on till the end. Definitely it sucks, but I\u2019m happy,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Elena Costante, originally from the U.K. and living in Montreal for a year-and-a-half, acknowledged the disappointment but offered a broader perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of disappointment\u2026 Going into it, we knew Canada were underdogs and the U.S. were going to dominate. Having watched the vast majority of that game, it wasn\u2019t quite as cutthroat,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, I believed Canada could have won, and would have won, so it makes it difficult, but it is what it is. Looking at the whole Olympics, maybe it\u2019s a fair result,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Montrealers cheer on their team<\/p>\n

Cam Poirier, a Montrealer, praised the women\u2019s team for their effort and resilience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t expect Team Canada to win, right?\u2026 USA had an amazing roster. But the thing is, we always are able to pull out miracles. Team Canada, the women, I\u2019m specifically talking about women, always are able to make the miracle happen. And so I think they showed us that they can bring it. It didn\u2019t happen. It\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Poirier highlighted the team\u2019s performance across the Olympics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe finale, they did show up\u2026 They made Canada proud,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Crushed but proud: reflections from the community<\/p>\n

Marie-Eve Tremblay described the final as \u201ccrushing\u201d but acknowledged the team\u2019s resilience.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m destroyed, basically because we played so well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way we played against the U.S. the last time and even Switzerland, I had no expectation at all for this game. But after the first period, we were holding our own and it was possible. So it\u2019s just so crushing to have lost the game because of a dubious change of line at the end. So, but it was a very pretty goal, I have to say, but still, it\u2019s so crushing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even in defeat, Montrealers celebrated Team Canada\u2019s determination, skill, and resilience.
