As Spring Training gets going and the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> continue evaluating the health of their rotation, the biggest focus will be on ace Zack Wheeler and where he stands in his recovery process.<\/p>\n

Wheeler had venous thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and will likely miss Opening Day.<\/p>\n

The veteran right-hander is the most important player in the rotation, so any progress should be viewed as a good thing.<\/p>\n

Matt Gelb of The Athletic gave an important update that should have Phillies fans fired up<\/p>\n

\u201cHe threw again on Wednesday from 120 feet and reported no issues. Wheeler is excited about his progress. He could soon be throwing from a mound. A return sometime in late April or early May remains a realistic target. Wheeler could accelerate things if he continues to feel strong,\u201d he wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is an encouraging step in the right direction for Wheeler, who posted a 2.71 ERA a campaign ago before the injury. Most importantly, as long as he doesn\u2019t deal with any pain, we should see him back on the rubber in the near future.<\/p>\n

If Wheeler continues progressing without any issues, April or May seems to be a possibility. It might not be April, but it could be the end of the month.<\/p>\n

The Phillies have enough to get by without him for the time being, but he\u2019ll be needed throughout the year.<\/p>\n
