Eric Dane, best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan (\u201cMcSteamy\u201d) on \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d and as complicated father Cal Jacobs on \u201cEuphoria,\u201d died February 19, his family confirmed to People Magazine.<\/p>\n
Dane was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease,\u00a0in 2025.<\/p>\n

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane grew up in the Bay Area, attending Sequoia High School in Redwood City and San Mateo High School in San Mateo. After graduating from the latter, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. In the 1990s, he played bit parts on television series \u201cSaved by the Bell,\u201d \u201cThe Wonder Years,\u201d \u201cRoseanne,\u201d and \u201cMarried\u2026 with Children\u201d and landed the recurring role of Dr. Wyatt Cooper on \u201cGideon\u2019s Crossing\u201d in 2000. That same year, he made his film debut in Rich Cowan\u2019s \u201cThe Basket.\u201d<\/p>\n
He appeared in other movies throughout the early aughts, including \u201cZoe,\u201d \u201cDuncan,\u201d \u201cJack & Jane,\u201d \u201cSol Goode,\u201d \u201cFeast,\u201d \u201cX-Men: The Last Stand\u201d and \u201cMarley & Me.\u201d He also had a starring role in \u201cOpen Water 2\u201d and played Jason Dean for two seasons on The WB\u2019s \u201cCharmed.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2005, he made his first guest appearance as Dr. Mark Sloan on a Season 2 episode of \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d His character was so well-received that he became a regular in the following season and remained so until he was written off in Season 8. Nevertheless, he still appeared in two Season 9 episodes and reprised the character once more, 19 years later, in the Season 17 episode \u201cBreathe.\u201d<\/p>\n
Throughout the 2010s, he appeared in the A&E television movie \u201cWedding Wars\u201d and the theatrical rom-com \u201cValentine\u2019s Day\u201d and was a member of the main cast on Michael Bay\u2019s \u201cThe Last Ship,\u201d which ran on TNT from 2014 through 2019.<\/p>\n
In 2019, he began playing Cal Jacobs, the secretly bisexual father of Nate Jacobs, on HBO\u2019s \u201cEuphoria,\u201d appearing in 12 episodes across the show\u2019s first two seasons. He reprised the role for the show\u2019s third season.<\/p>\n
The final performances in Dane\u2019s career include roles in the films \u201cBorderline,\u201d \u201cInto the Beautiful,\u201d and \u201cFamily Secrets\u201d and the television series \u201cWireless,\u201d \u201cCountdown\u201d and \u201cKabul.\u201d<\/p>\n
After going public with his diagnosis, he became an advocate for others with ALS, working with I Am ALS on legislation and fundraising.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been an open book about certain things in my life. This is something I felt compelled to share with people,\u201d Dane told the Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cI don\u2019t really have a dog in the fight, per se, when it comes to worrying about what people are going think about me. This is more of a: \u2018How can I help?
