{"id":487394,"date":"2026-02-20T10:08:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T10:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/487394\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T10:08:44","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T10:08:44","slug":"black-history-month-honoured-in-mississauga-this-february-city-of-mississauga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/487394\/","title":{"rendered":"Black History Month honoured in Mississauga this February \u2013 City of Mississauga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Black History Month is a dedicated time to honour the contributions, achievements and history of Black communities and residents in Mississauga and beyond. <\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s national theme is \u201c30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations \u2014 From Nation Builders to Tomorrow\u2019s Visionaries.\u201d This theme celebrates three decades of Black History Month in Canada and recognizes the enduring legacy of Black Canadians, whose leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, continue to influence our present, and will inspire future generations.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the month of February, the City of Mississauga, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/blackcaucusalliance.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Caucus Alliance<\/a>, will continue to commemorate Mississauga\u2019s Black community through a variety of programs and events.<\/p>\n<p>All are encouraged to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/campaign.mississauga.ca\/black-history-month\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black History Month webpage<\/a>, which highlights a variety of learning opportunities and engagement activities designed to deepen the understanding of this important month, some of which include but aren\u2019t limited to the following:<\/p>\n<p>Raptors 905 vs Greensboro Swarm \u2013 Black Heritage Month Game<br \/>\nREEL Thursdays \u2013 The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit<br \/>\nAfrican Drumming &amp; Storytelling<br \/>\nBook Club: Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson<br \/>\nMidday Melodies: Chamber Music Live with Waleed Abdulhamid<br \/>\nLibrary Movie Screenings<br \/>\nOnline Author Talk: Antonio Michael Downing<br \/>\nVirtual Roots and Resilience Fitness Classes<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating Black Excellence Event<\/p>\n<p>The third annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/events-and-attractions\/events-calendar\/celebrating-black-excellence-2026?eventdate=2026-02-27T19%253A00%253A00&amp;schedule=23108\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Celebrating Black Excellence<\/a> event will take place on Friday, February 27, 2026 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mississauga City Hall. The event will include performances, keynote speakers and an awards ceremony. If you know someone deserving of a Black Excellence Award, please take a moment to submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mississauga.ca\/city-of-mississauga-news\/news\/know-an-outstanding-individual-nominations-are-open-for-mississaugas-fourth-annual-black-excellence-awards\/#:~:text=To%20be%20eligible%2C%20the%20nominee,Equity%20Diversity%20and%20Inclusion%20(EDI)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nomination<\/a> \u2013 which will be accepted until February 13, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Background<\/p>\n<p>Discover more about the actions the City is taking to engage Black community members in decision-making processes, ensuring that programs and services are equitable and inclusive for all residents.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Mississauga recognizes that racism, and in particular anti-Black racism and discrimination is a crisis in our community that requires immediate and sustained attention.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Mississauga joins the global community in recognizing 2015 to 2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the House of Commons officially designated August 1 as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/canadian-heritage\/campaigns\/emancipation-day.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emancipation Day<\/a>. Each year, the City of Mississauga raises the Pan-African flag and lights the City Hall clock tower red, black and green to recognize this important day.<\/p>\n<p>Quotes<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMississauga is now and has always been a proudly diverse city. It\u2019s through our work with community groups including the Black Caucus Alliance that allows us to better understand the needs, the struggles and the history of our residents. By celebrating our ancestors\u2019 resilience, we reaffirm our commitment to dismantling anti-Black racism.
